I don't know I've never built one or run one. I just saw the idea and thought to pass it on. Id google it and see what you get. Id imagine if your only running it for a few days at a time it wouldn't be that expensive. Yes I'm sure you'd see a jump that month but if you kept it to few months out of 12 it might be worth while. But then again as I said we get to hang ours in the barn so I don't know the operating costs.

Katy you husband built you a smoker, it might be worth looking into if he's that handy.

Thanks Jared, that's something I hadn't thought of and it could work out well here. I'm sure it would pull more power than a more traditional unit, but for a few weeks to a month of usage a year, especially during the "usually" cooler fall months I don't think it would be too bad--certainly less expensive and more personally satisfying than taking it to the butcher shop.

I like processing our own meat. It's a lot of work, but I feel good about it.

i found some one to butcher for me, not for pay, but 2 for 1 deal. she cleans 2 birds and i get 1 cleaned bird back. i'm not squimish i'm just not good at butchering chickens, takes me 45 min each. my time is worth something, plus i'm feeding 2 families.

i butcher my own deer, but ifi could find some one to do 2 for 1 deer, I'd be set!!

BTW i dont age my deer, get em down and quickly ground.

Id love someone else to do mine if I could afford it-they charge like 3.75$ a bird to process and that would put me over the egde at paying 14$ perbird when finished-but livig in the middle of nowhere Id have to travel a looooong way to get er dun! I do them myself:-(
