Butchering your roosters!

Since you are talking about Chanteclers, where do you guys get them from? I am interested in getting some. Any hatcheries that ship to Canada?

Murray McMurray ships up here, but the cost is prohibitive and they do not have Chanteclers, I don't think. I suggest finding a local breeder, depending on where you are they can be fairly easy to find. Check the CFI breeder directory.

Does anyone use the cone method for butchering? I will be attempting butchering for the first time this fall and had heard that was the easiest method for dispatching them. I don't want alot of drama.

All we have are layer types, I would like to have some J Giants or Australorps, big bird =big meat.

Orpingtons taste great. Bigger than Australorps, but not fast growing. Good dual purpose, nice enough to keep 1 or 2 roosters. I am on here because I want to get some chickens again, and I wanted to see if there are better choices. I am deciding just st. run Orpington will probably be what I do.

Hi,
I was wondering if they are as big as Orpingtons. I had a flock in the late 80's, the reds were smaller, better egg layers than those Orpingtons. I have been reading about red rangers, but just want to keep one breed in my new flock.

The cone method was what my dad often did. It will work. Everyone has their own preference. Some prefer to hatchet and other to dislocate. They all work. the hatchet or cone do allow you to bleed he bird though.
