Butchering your roosters!

I agree. We raised 10 Cornish Rocks this year and we will not be repeating the experience either. When they first went outside they had so much fun and were just like regular chicks until the time came that they could barely walk. I knew going in that would happen but seeing that every day was just too sad. We always process our extra roos, as I am suspicious of anyone on CL taking them, maybe for cockfighting. Our extra boys are always treated well

We currently have 5 Jersey Giants cockerels who are almost 19 wks & are due for freezer camp very soon. They are amazing in the slow cooker.
I am in Prescott. I am drooling at the thought! I roast them @ 325 in my chicken size roasting pan. Need help? Have sharp knife, will travel!

LOL. Hello neighbor. Paulden area here. Electric countertop roaster?

Had a 9 month old JG who went aggressive on me. Was close to 8 lbs dressed out. After resting for 3 days and then in slow cooker for 8 hours, he was the best, tender rooster of the breeds we have tried. Even at that age. Which is why we are going to keep the JG's for meat birds. The hens are awesome layers too.

The boys we currently have are not his sons. I refuse to breed an aggressive too.

My old roaster pan goes in the oven. It has a nice heavy lid that keeps in the juice. New ones are too light! Then take the lid off the last 30-45 min to brown the skin. I need to stop thinking about it!:drool
LOL

Does anyone use the cone method for butchering? I will be attempting butchering for the first time this fall and had heard that was the easiest method for dispatching them. I don't want alot of drama.

We have used the cone method. It is not always easy getting the jugular cut correct. We have gone back to cleaver and chopping block and use the cone for bleeding for the time being.

I liked the idea of sticking the chicken in a cone or bag and using PVC pipe cutters to remove the head. Can't miss and hard to do 'wrong'.
