I have a m/f pair of buttons. The female continually sits on eggs but has been unsuccessful in hatching them. I've been considering removing the male but wondered if it would be best to replace him with a female.

Background: they are indoors in a community cage with diamond doves, canaries, and parson's finch. The male is oh-so-loud for indoors. I think he hears outdoor quail and is calling to them (and calling, and calling...). This is why I am thinking of removing him from the cage. But I wondered if it would be best for the remaining girl to have another button in the cage. If I do get a female I also wonder about introductions. Thinking I may have to have them separate but side by side for awhile?

Thoughts welcome.

I'm a retired teacher. I often had button quail in the classroom. I kept them as pairs. quite often the hen hatched chicks. We found that the male had to be separated from the hen when it came time for her to brood. The males always disrupted the nest making it impossible for the hen to brood. All males are loud but the crowing with mine was intermittent. Possibly a second hen would help. After all, the crowing not only marks his territory but it also attracts females. To introduce the new hen put both in a new cage where neither has established territory. After a few days put both hens in your aviary.
