Button quail bedding

My button quail have been kicking their pine shavings around and I was wondering if putting hay or straw over it will reduce the mess.

I guess it would. It might make their droppings stay above the bedding though. I'd just try it and see if I like it. I really like using sand, but sometimes - if there are too many birds in the cage or humidity is high - they tend to get poo balls on their toes. If that's an issue, I use shavings. I usually have shavings in the back corners even if they are on sand, to increase the chance of them going broody.
