I returned home today to find that there was some blood on the wood chips of my buttons tank enclosure....the male Quail I have has been attacking another female (I think) for the past 2 days. Today I saw her and noticed that her nail had broken off?! There was quite a bit of blood....this kind of worried me. Should I be trimming their nails??

It may have been that she got the nail stuck somewhere and pulled part of it off to get loose. You may have to trim nails if they get too long, but it is not too common for quail. What so of bedding do you use, or are they on wire?

I've never had a button with an overgrown nail and I have kept them on sand, wood shavings, wood chips and hemp. I was giving a foot bath to one the other day though and when it was done and I wanted to return it to the cage, it flew away from me. When I caught it, there was a little blood around one of its nails and it seemed like the tip of the nail had broken of. So maybe the nails get hurt easily?
