Button Quail Bum Issues

Does the bath need to be a continuous routine or do I just do it once?

Epsom salt soaks are a good anti-inflammatory treatment, so if your bird handles the experience well you might try soaking 1-2x a day for 5-10 min. You'll want to make sure your bird is fully dry after. Some people use a hair dryer on low. Keeping your bird warm is important when they are sick.

The bin for the quail food says antibiotic free, and I’m being told he needs antibiotics so should I be looking for food with antibiotics? Or does he need a specific kind of antibiotic? If so, what kind?

It is good the food is antibiotic free. No need for birds to always be on medication. If your bird's swelling is due to an internal infection, giving a course of antibiotics may help. I don't know which medicine, or at what dose. Can anyone else help out? @BantyChooks @DK newbie @007Sean

Also I’m very confused with this whole “he’s a boy, she’s a girl” situation because we put 6 of the (definite) females eggs in an incubator after we saw the two mate and 3 of them hatched. This means he’s a dude, right? Or am I missing something?

I'll start by saying I don't know that much about button quail, especially their colorings. I think what may be throwing us off is that for males we would expect to see red/rust feathers around the vent and/or a bib? But perhaps this particular color feathers out differently?

Hatching fertilized eggs is good proof that one of your birds is a male. If, and this is the kicker, you collected the eggs after you had owned the birds for at least several weeks. Birds can continue to produce fertilized eggs for quite a while after they are no longer with a rooster/male. With Cotrunix quail, fertility last about 10-12 days after being exposed to a roo. For full sized chickens this time period stretched of up to a month. I am not sure about button quail. @JaeG ?

I've never tried to see how long fertility lasts for with the Buttons. Would be an interesting experiment.

The medicated feed is (i think) likely one to protect against a coccidiosis outbreak, not one with a general antibiotic to fight infections. In my country the only way to get antibiotics is to go to a vet (and good luck finding one that knows the first thing about birds)! Hopefully someone can tell you which antibiotic might help and how to get it. Poor birdy!

I have the same issue regarding antibiotics, have to go to a vet to get them. So I don't which ones you might be able to buy. But things like the ACV I suggested earlier or other things with probiotics in them might help as well.

X2 about the sex of the bird. Also, the shape of the quail indicates female, they have a specific shape. Males are also smaller. That is a female with no doubt, but if I'm wrong I'm wrong :idunno
