Hi all, we are new to this site. We just wanted to pop in and say hello. We have been raising and caring for button quail for a few years. We created a blog that shows off our birds and also has a lot of information we've learned and gathered over time. Hope it helps...

Hi! I have a couple questions for you if you don't mind.

I work at a wildlife rehabilitation center and we recently received an injured female (I believe) button quail. She's all healed and I've decided to adopt her. I have a 10 gallon aquarium but I think it's too small. Would a homemade "cage" similar to the brooder boxes on your website work? I was planning on replacing most of the top with a soft mesh for airflow and to reduce the possibility of injury. Also, do you think it's a good idea to get her a mate or is she okay alone? I'm not too interested in breeding them at the moment, but I don't want her to be lonely! She's pretty timid and skittish. Any suggestions for helping her get used to being around people and being handled? Thanks in advance!

I know I had a lone female for a week or so, before I bought her another female and a male. I had her in a 30 gallon tank with a mesh lid. She was skittish to the extreme, and panicked when I entered the room, fed her, changed her water, anything. She escaped the tank twice. Since I added the other two she's calmed down a lot, and seems to take cues from them. If they feel its safe to eat, so does she, and I get to see her behaving naturally while I watch them, rather than cowering against the back glass as if she could pass through it.
I'd advise at least getting another female, as they are highly social and feel more secure with others around to watch their backs.

Can you please first send a picture of her so I can make sure she is a button quail.

If she is a button quail, you can leave her in the ten gallon aqarium or the cage you're suggesting...whatever you prefer. I WOULD get her another female. They really are group birds and she probably is a bit lonely. As for her being so skittish, I would try to handle her if you can. Make sure you clip her wings a little. This will make her calmer too. "Pent" is very right too...being around her own kind will calm her down quite a bit. They will show her everything is okay. Hope this helps...
