Button Quail Chat

New behavior I've been observing: the male fluffs up enormously like a turkey and charges around. He isn't specifically chasing the female, but she scurries to a hiding place and chatters loudly. The male runs back and forth a few times with his plumage super fluffed, then he slowly drops his feathers again and goes back to what he was doing, and the hen comes back out and they just go back to normal. He doesn't seem to be responding to any threat. He does it once or twice a day, it last about ten or twenty seconds. Anyone else's do that?

Mine do that as a dominance display. "This is my piece of land. Move along pilgrim."

Six chicks hatched last week from my normal project, 5 normals and one red breasted. I set 15 eggs, so that's only a 40% hatch rate. My male is a dud. I definitely don't want to pass low fertility on. Now I have to decide if I want to start all over with a different male. The purpose of this project is to get a "pure" normal line to use for test breedings when working with different mutations. Since some mutations automatically have low fertility, I need to make sure the normal line is up to snuff. <sigh> I guess just thought out that decision while typing.

Hey guys! I am interested in buying 12 or more button quail eggs in the early spring to hatch. Does anyone have a reliable buyer that they would recommend? Or any general suggestions?

So Annie had two eggs laid in a depression next to her box this time under a fern. But today I woke up to find three eggs tucked into the nest box. How do they carry their eggs??? In their wings? She had to lift them through a small hole an inch off the floor, or else roll each one all the way around to the open side of the box to get them in there. I have never heard of a bird that carries its eggs or moves its nest!

i have no idea how they do it, but i’ve found several eggs in a coturnix hideaway that I know weren’t laid there!!

Grover is very personable and comes to greet me at the door. He will follow my hand when im pulling out old shavings and vacuuming out the cage even. I throw them mealworms as I go about it to get them to associate me messing around in the cage positively and it has worked well.

I've watched my birds roll eggs up to three feet to get them in a spot they like. Then they change their minds and roll them someplace else in an hour or so. It's hilarious.
