I think I will, but I don't want to kill the poor little things! I'll read up on them and wait until it's warm weather to order them in the spring...i'm excited but i want them to do well...

I dont know of any hatcheries that sell them as in where you can order chickens too from. However, a "commertial" type breeder I know of who breeds just about every small bird you can think of breeds a TON of types of button quails, you can buy eggs and adults from them (i dunno about chicks but maybe). www.zebrafinch.com OR do like I did, buy from the fellow BYC breeders on here. I have two chicks right now one came from a batch of eggs from Tennesee (marie_martin) and the other came from a batch from Ohio (lilralphieroosmama-sn may be off some).

Dont knwo if they have any for sale right now, but since you're waiting until spring you'll have a bunch of choices of breeders to buy from. OR do like me and buy from a few different breeders to get a fun assortment

They're fun too by the way....i have my trio in a 10 gallon tank right beside me here at the computer...its' really fun, and it's a good way to get them used to you being around them

I think they're really too small for a chicken coop... the chickens would think they're food.

They're best suited to small cages or aquariums, 1/2" hardware cloth cages or atriums.

Some people keep them in huge outdoor aviaries bigger than most chicken coops on here. They also keep them on the ground just fine. The biggest problem I think would be the chickens picking on them. I don't know if they'd learn to ignore the tiny quail or not but it wouldn't take much for a chicken to kill these guys. Even if it worked out eventually some would probably be lost in the introductions and through accidents from the larger birds running them over or just randomly pecking them. Your 2nd problem is that they are escape artists and if one gets loose outside you will never see it again. You'd probably have to build your chicken pen like they do outdoor aviaries with much studier and small wire and double door systems. Otherwise I doubt you'll manage to keep them without escapees. I've thought about it and I just don't see a safe way to keep my buttons loose with my chickens.

You could however just block off a corner of the coop to give them their own pen. Most don't provide their quail with outdoor access. They just keep them in rabbit hutches or other pens in a building. I have a full spectrum bulb over mine to simulate sunlight.

Cool I only had one chick hatch from the eggies she sent me (not her or her eggies fault, it was my darn incubators fault). "Gordon" is the chick from her
