Feeling energetic tonight after shopping today. I will be glad when the workshop is wired for electric and i can work in there any old time. Got some free pallets to make a compost bin out of. Of course, they need to dry out since it rained off and on all day. I want to paint them so they last and look better.

Use poultry dust on their bottoms for a couple of nights and then again in a week.

You may need to treat the coop too. You can get a permectrum concentrate and make a spray to spray in the coop. Make sure to get the roosts and cracks. Treat the nest boxes too.

What you are seeing is an indication of mites. Keep treating monthly until you do not see streaks on the eggs.
Ok.... So, first off let me say that living in horse country sucks. All of the stores around here only carry feeders/waterer and feed for poultry. Absolutely nothing in the way of caring for them.
I went to the nearest co-op (an hour away). I didn't see anything so I asked. The guy I asked said he'd get the "egg manager". So the egg manager proceeds to tell me that she doesn't have chickens and doesn't know about their care.
I saw a bug spray that had permethrin in it. She said that I shouldn't use that as the dust she told me to get would kill all of the mites right away. I told her that certain mites live in nooks, crannies and wood, but she insisted that I shouldn't use the spray (mind you it was intended for horse barns). So I walked away with a can of dusting powder containing 5% carbaryl. Does that sound right? Does it work well?

Oh man, i can't remember what i used years ago in TN. But it said right on it for use with poultry. It was a powder so i got one of those glass shakers they use to put peppers on food , kind of like what you get parmesan cheese in to apply it with. Maybe you can check with the manufacturers?
