Congrats Diva!
Sorry about the doors, Cap.
So I have been letting the DH take "care" of the chickens - I get the feed and scratch ready in the mornings, but I am not following him around and checking up. He gathers the eggs and brings them in and we have had multiple discussions about a good egg vs something else and please do not bring in any eggs that the broodies have kicked out because they are not good eggs even if they are in the middle of the coop. Floating vs sinking, the whole bit. DH managed to bring in some eggs yesterday or the day before, it has been busy..., and they were in a tall cup and so I put them on the floor to make sure they did not get close to the counter, just in case and low and behold, tonight, one blew right when DH was standing next to it and it stank to high heaven and gross and all that!
He says, "What is wrong with those chickens?" ?????Really!???? "Nothing is wrong with the chickens," I say. " You have to do the float test outside before the eggs come into the house!" "Well, maybe we need to keep the roos separated." " It has nothing to do with the roos! " " So sinking is good and floating is bad?" "Yes, just do the test outside and keep track of who is nesting where."
I am so over any egg issues. I am so over gross eggs and stupid broodies that half brood or it is just the crazy summer that has my head spinning.
I think that I need to rearrange the coop to make it easier for DH to do the chickens, that would probably help. I need to make the nest box openings face the door and change the roost direction. Maybe this weekend will work..., but the floor got a good cloroxing and the cat was happy with that.
I'm out and the coffee is ready for someone to push the button in the AM!

anyway, I don't get what makes them go bad. The heat? Partial incubation? I do try to throw away really dirty eggs or eggs laid outside. Well, not throw away, but give to the animals. I have one hen that always lays a poopy egg so we give those to the dog since it's kind of a lot and I've had a few eggs somehow end up in the middle of the run? That uaually doesn't happen now. My family doesn't really help at all with the chickens. My mom tries to sometimes but sometimes I have to fix something anyway so easier to just do it myself. My dad just refuses cause he claims to get pecked? But he loves to point out when they need something, like food or water, as if I don't already know... yet refuse to do it himself lol oh well. I need to go back to the old setup though that lasted longer. But anyway, now in the new coop the nest boxes are outside the run (previously the coop was inside the run so you had to go inside to get the eggs. Now that I don't have to go in every time, I am much better about collecting the eggs every day and the rest of the family can help too if want to though I usually still do it. But they always hated going in the pen especially after rain lol anyway, curious what makes the bad eggs frequent enough to warrant the test? And is laying in the coop itself bad? I do have one that lays in the corner of the coop but it's thankfully on a near corner in front of the people door so I don't mind and I know they're fresh daily. And the chickens really don't go to that half of the coop since the boxes are in the front half. This appears to be a new thing though since moving to the new coop cause she never did it in the other one. Idk why she prefers the corner given that these boxes are huge and roomy but oh well lol anyway, sorry, rambling now. But sorry for the exploded egg and good luck training DH lol
