Thank you for the well wishes everyone. I decided not to agonize over making a decision and had to put one of my girls down last night. I suspect Marek's so we are sending her for necropsy to be sure.

You know how things are here...one group will keep their birds in the house for 3 months in a sling spoon feeding them and others say put them down right away. I hate those decisions, just needed to get away and do what needed done.

Sorry about the melodrama yesterday, I'm just worried for the rest of them and I loved that girl.

Oh I'm sorry. I hate those decisions.
What makes you think it might be Mareks?

She wasn't able to walk straight, stumbling, curling toes, wing paralysis, reduced appetite. When I went to get her and bring her inside to look her over she was in the loft in the coop way too early in the day. She never slept in the loft except when Fugly was a chick and too scared to be on the roost.

No broken bones, not eggbound I've dealt with that before, no nasal discharge or respiratory issues.

ETA when she did try to walk she couldn't tuck her wings like usual so she was getting her feet caught on the front edges.

If it is Mareks how did she contract it?
Is she a relatively new addition to your flock and if so, where did she come from?

No, not a newbie, one of my original 5 girls and 2 years old. We got them from the feed store so they're hatchery stock. I haven't added live birds in over a year and they came from a local breeder who I know and trust and they were quarantined then. Fugly was hatched, by the girl we put down, last summer. Our quail were hatched here.

There are other flocks around, we can hear 2 other roosters. I get a lot of wild pigeons and doves in my yard so if they are here, it's possible they've been there. Marek's can be spread by wild birds and sometimes we get pigeons here that can't fly for one reason or another and have mobility issues. We usually take care of those and get them in the trash right away, but sometimes they get under things and we can't fetch them out so have to let them die and retrieve bodies later.

I think wild birds brought it here. I keep my yard raked, clean the poop board twice a week and sweep the inside of the coop once a week to knock down dust and dander.

I'm sorry IM. It sounds like you've done everything right and just had bad luck.

I don't know a lot about Marecks but I do know that despite carrying the disease chickens can still live 'normal' lives. They are just more prone to die from other issues because of a reduction in the effectiveness of their immune system.

Thanks Shad :hugs

Yea, it is possible but if she were more prone to other diseases that puts two flocks here at risk not to mention others in the area. Gotta think about the greater good and not let emotions cloud the issue. At least that's how I feel. Others might feel differently and that's ok too.

I'm keeping an eye on the rest of the birds for now and going to clean and sanitize the coop over the weekend.

Good morning Cafe.
Coffee is on the stove.
Miso soup with seaweed in the pot. There's some wholemeal bread to dip in it.
-3 centigrade here overnight low.
Blue sky and sunshine now.

Thanks for the coffee Shad! If it's ok with you, I'll just toast up a slice of the bread.
