I can understand possibly a ban on chickens, or livestock I suppose is the catch all description that makes a ban seem more reasonable, but to ban keeping roosters because they may be bred for fighting doesn't seem all that bright to me. I don't know, but I wouldn't have thought many that keep a flock of chickens, rooster/s and hens would use their roosters for fighting. Maybe a better 'ban' would be rooster only flocks if the authorities believe that rooster fights are that common in the area.
Do you live in an urban zone?
I live in a city but they have similar laws in the country here. A breeder of Heritage chickens had all of his Cock birds confiscated and destroyed because he had 20 Roosters.

He sued and won but still lost a lot of breeding time

Cant recoup the time lost, and all that went into creating generations of fine poultry.

High praise coming from you,Shadrach! Thanks
I think you'll love having broody hens sit and hatch. I find it so much more interesting than using an incubator and a lot less hassle.
I've got five gone broody here now. The trouble is it's too early in the year and one is a chick killer so she can't sit. I took the eggs away from two others today and they've been fine. Spent a couple of hours sitting on empty nests and then joined their tribes later. They're still walking around all puffed up and clucking like crazy but both got on their perches tonight. One more can't make her mind up if she wants to sit or just likes making a fuss about it.:lol:
I think she'll have a proper go next month.
The roosters aren't terribly impressed. Broody won't crouch and the roosters don't bother asking. They know what the answer will be.:p:gig

Is that like a state thing, or does it vary from area to area withing the state?

Each County has their own rules sadly. It pays to know what is allowed where you live here. The person that lost the roosters was in Glenn county, California
