My mom loves the idea so I guess I’m gonna start the hunt for some fertile hatching eggs soon

Gonna give her some time to see if she’s serious or not though first.

Maybe let her sit on some ceramic eggs. And gonna try to see if I can get her to move to the middle nest instead of the one she’s in since the other girls don’t really use the middle one much because of stud in the middle of the doorway. And I can put something over the stud too to keep her in there/keep other girls out too if I wanted.

Don't wait too long, 3 to 5 days should be good to be sure. How exciting!

Okay, thank you! That’s good, it’ll give me time to go pick up some eggs haha maybe this weekend? Or later in the week. Not sure how long she’s been sitting for because my mom and I have been gone since Wednesday night (my dad was home until today, we got back today) and I doubt he noticed her sitting haha so she could have already been sitting a couple days but I want to be sure. She seems pretty serious so far. She puffs up and everything. And I kicked her off twice and she hasn’t ventured far, runs right back to the nest! But she does get off it when I shoo her so not sure. I will give her a few days to decide, she might have just started. She definitely was not broody when we left. And she is puffing and everything so I think she wants it. If not, I will just put them in the incubator and brood them myself. I got an incubator in March finally but haven’t used it yet.

I am definitely excited!! Never hatched my own before! Have had two orders of chicks but they came from a hatchery (same one) as day olds so never actually hatched anything. So I’m super excited. Especially since she seems to really want to be a mother too.

One of my Orpingtons actually appeared to be thinking about it recently too and actually now that I think about it, this one too even before she went full broody. They were both sleeping in the nest boxes for a while and sometimes in there in the day but they weren’t serious. I guess just thinking about it? I thought they just went to bed too late and couldn’t find the roost. But now that I think about it and now that this one is broody, I think they were both considering becoming moms! LOL guess the Orpington decided motherhood wasn’t for her! but the Australorp has apparently decided it is worth the challenge.

@KDOGG331, it took me 8 days to break Astrid, my Australorp. She is now godmother to the chicks! Barb lets her come over and hang around the family. (I hope Astrid doesn't get any ideas.)
I could send you some of my fertile eggs. Fabio's evil seed could populate the planet.

At some point over the course of me owning chickens the following transformation occurred...
I went to put the garbage can down to the end of the driveway yesterday and inside the can was a box that had not been broken down. And why was it in the garbage can instead of the recycling bin? So I took it out to break it down and the smell hit me. This was the box I had put some rotten meat in that I drove out into the woods to leave for some critter to eat. The box had maggots writhing around in it. Instead of cringing and immediately dropping it back in the can I said to DH "Hey! I could feed these to the chickens!"

I was inside with the a/c on, trust me. I checked on the birds, they were all in the coop doorway letting the mist hit the back of their necks and their combs. Smart little devils.

I remember back in 79 or maybe 80 working in Dallas, it got up to 113 for about a week maybe 10 days but I've never seen 115 here. Thankfully
