Little Donk had a weasel hanging of her bum feathers this evening.
Donk is pretty small for a cross breed. She bantam size looking side on but front on you realise that she is very stocky. She sort of stomps around the place and has the most indelicate walk of any of the hens. But, when it comes to being quick and to flying, Donk is the fastest and can stay off the ground for 300 feet.
I only just caught the attack and if it hadn't been for seeing Gedit charge into the bamboo I wouldn't have looked for the others. I looked up the track in time to see a few of Donks feathers fluttering in the wind and Donk, half running and half attempting to fly with a weasel hanging on like grim death. Donk got maybe 10 inches off the ground and the weasel sort of dropped off with a mouthful of feathers.
We get a lot of weasel attacks and they are very rarely fatal. If the chicken can run and find cover it's over. What the weasel does not want is having to face a chicken head on. The weasels eyes are a major weak spot and they much prefer being away from the sharp end of a chicken.

Still... that's scary.
The weasels my flock would have to deal with are Fishers and they can take down a porcupine. A chicken would be easy to take.

Yeah, Fishers are quite a lot bigger than the weasels we get here.
We get the very occasional American black Mink. Thankfully it's very rare because it always means a dead chicken.
The last grown hen to die from a weasel attack here was Cheepy and she was tiny. That's quite a few years ago.
