BYC Café

Good afternoon cafe. I made fresh coffee if you want some.

The little girl in the top pic is a verified layer, I know the black pullet in the second pic lays and suspect the big girl in the lead there is the third. We butchered the cockerel this morning, he's related to some of these girls and it was time. They'll be able to establish a pecking order before any of the chicks join the ranks. It's kind of nice not to have to keep one eye behind me all the time.

Enjoy your afternoon.

They are pretty cool looking ladies.

I know the feeling about keeping an eye out behind me. Fabio has been a serious PITA lately. Back to jumping at the back of my legs at the afternoon feedings. I just ignore him.
Yesterday I made him walk in front of me. He stopped at the door to the run and at first didn't want to let me in. I just kept walking slowly forward until he moved out of the way. Then I offered him some food. The girls all took it but it seems to placate him as he was fine at the dinner table. We'll have to see how tonight goes.

There is a strange cheeping noise coming from the nest box in my house.
Mel's earlier behavior makes much more sense now. It was her last chance to have a bath for a while. Interesting that not only did she know the chick was about to hatch, but also realized the consequence of it and took action.
Does she only have a single egg?

I wouldn't be able to sleep! I'd be "spying" on them all night!
I've lost track of the number of hatches by broody hens now. I still love watching them but I need my sleep!
There's nothing I can do. She's in the safest place here. She's done it all before..........which reminds me to mention to her that more Treacles would be somewhat awkward..........I need to finish off the repairs to maternity unit 2 in the morning.

It's not the reason I put him in the freezer but it's a nice break for sure. They can be such buttheads
