It depends on how the hens lay. Hopefully mostly Turken/ Red Ranger/Dorking mixes, geared toward dual purpose. I'll keep the largest with naked necks, the rest will go to the freezer.

Is it getting easier to process now that you've done it a bit? I've never tried it, but then never had extras to need it.

@penny1960 I hope you feel better soon!

x2 hope tomorrow is better for you Penny!

Well now. I guess I owe you a 'thank you' for encouraging me to get a picture of that chick. While I was out in the pen on the far side of the chicken bush I heard the signature popping the fence makes when it's going to ground.
Something got caught up in the net and pushed down about 20 feet of the length. It bent the spikes on some of the posts.

Yikes! Any tracks?

I made it to Glen Allen just after dark. If SOMEONE would have helped load the truck, I might have made it in the light. I forgot the fabric top of my canopy, so I am going to toss a tarp up there for shade. Ended up bringing the pup with me, hubby didn't want her in his room and if she was caged up she would be crying all night. I found a jacket for her, and glad I brought it because she was shivering.
Hope the sale goes well tomorrow. My spot was reserved for someone else, no fair!

The second time I felt a little more guilt, but it was a learning lesson. Can't let your guard down and get attached.
We aren't buying store chicken now though.

Dorking/Red Ranger chicks. So darn cute! They kind of waddle View attachment 1913580Almost 4 weeks old.

I ended up with a single Nn chick last month and got a buddy pullet at the feed store. Said pullet is actually a cockerel, and has extra toes so is destined for the freezer. I also have a little white Turken/Bresse cockerel which makes me happy.

I have one more hatch next month, waiting on shipped eggs :fl
I bet the turkenxbresse will be very tasty!

Is it far better, IM? I'm wanting to do this as well.

@penny1960 I hope you get into the doc and no pneumonia.
