BYC Café

Oh Dobie... :hugsI'm bawling my eyes out over here. :hitIts too close to my future reality & its hitting me really hard. I'm sorry! :( Hugs! :hugs:hugs:hugs

I'm with you Roomy. So sorry you're going through loosing a fur baby too. I have one whose days are numbered and it's breaking my heart :hugs

My eyes are swollen from crying so much. I was pretty much hysterical last night and hyperventilating while driving him in. It was bad.
It was a little easier after he was gone because I knew the pain was over for him.

I was crying after I read that you'd had to put him down Dobie :hugsI didn't know you'd also lost your friend, that's so much to deal with at once. I hope you can get in touch with your mom soon!

It's been tipping down here this afternoon. We've had a couple of minor landslides on the bank above the track to the village. Donk has a nest there and tonight of all nights she's decided to sit.:he
The bank below her nest has been washed away and I think another section is peeling off.
So, it's out with the head torch in the thunder and lighting to grab Donk from her nest.
She's worse than her mum for nesting out of the coops. She had laid what I took to be her last eggs of the year in one of the coops but she's obviously got more than one stash.
I was quite lucky to find where her nest is. I just happened to see her ruffle up at Myth this afternoon (broody behavior) and thought I better follow her.
It's a good nest. She's completely hidden from view and she has a stock net fence behind her at the top of the bank.
Donk hates being touched at all, never mind being picked up.:rant
I'll get one shot at this in the dark, in the rain, on a very steep bank covered in brambles and tall grass.
I'm going to try and take some pictures while I'm at it.

Yikes. That sounds like a recipe for scrapes and bruises. Good luck!

This was this morning. Mel has taken to bringing her chicks in and sitting by me while I'm on the computer.
I don't know what they are, but they're growing.:D

This is where Donk ahd her nest. On the other side of the fence is about two foot of relatively level bank and then it drops away at about 30 degrees from horizontal.
Thankfully the rain had turned to drizzle

This is where she goes in. She about 3 foot in. I can't follow her through there. Normally once they get the other side of the fence, even if you've followed them, they just disappear in that lot.

I got her! She hates me.:hit

It is in fact the thing I most dislike doing to hens. If I could I would let them all sit. I just can't feed and house more than I do.

Little Donk's heart was beating madly. I worry about their hearts when I move them like this. I could have left her out overnight, but we have a fox around at night atm; plus it must be pretty miserable sitting out in the pouring rain trying to keep the eggs dry and warm. I didn't risk a picture of Donk on the nest. There is always the chance that the hens moves deeper into the undergrowth and is then fully out of broody trance. I've lost one for the night before by messing about when I should have secured the hen as soon as the nest is exposed. Nice tidy nest.

Here she is. Slightly damp. That's big Gedit on her right.
