For the life of me, I can't figure out what my problem was, but I could do the math faster in my head than I could do it with that silly machine. Check it a second time on the machine? I just did it in my head, and what's on the machine is right, this is just slowing me down!!

Well, I didn't get the job. After the astonishing display of incompetence that I treated them to, I can't say I'm surprised. They write receipts by hand, which is about as low-tech as it comes, so it shouldn't have been a problem, right? Believe it or not, I couldn't seem to get the hang of the adding machine.
But as always, the coffee's good.

I know, "throw her in and hope she floats" is pretty much how these things are done; I'm just trying to find some pool to jump into where it won't take an infinity for me to get up to speed, or they have the time to wait for me to do so.
That's what I keep telling myself, but figuring out what direction "onward" is, is the hard part. There have been so many things that I have said, "I can't do that one because (fill in blank here);" this one looked not just do-able, but enjoyable.
Like @sourland , I've seen it before and recognized it for what it was, but it's been years since the last time I'd seen anybody doing it. I was like, "oh, gee, are we still doing that?" It's always seemed a trifle like trolling to me - I mean, if you just want to talk without anyone knowing what you are saying, we have pm's, you know? (I hear a childish voice chanting "I know something you don't know, I know something you don't know," when I see that kind of thing, and I think, "there's quite a few things that I know that you don't, but I'm nice enough to actually try not to make a point of it."
