I have seen them do that before! After all the discussion about predators and the tomcat, I can't help but now wonder if him showing up prompted her to hide them then bring them back when the coast was clear.

OhGeez!I was not surprised to find Astrid off the nest and on the chicks when I did lock up. I put her back on the nest and tucked the chicks around her. I'll be coming home with the incubator tomorrow. I can only hope she will sit tight until then. I know the kids act up at dusk and their distress peeping I'm sure is what prompted her to get off the nest.
If they are happily buzzing around and hopping up in the nest with her, she's okay.
After her (1 minute) break this morning Astrid walked in the ward, settled on the nest for about 10 seconds then scooted off and over to the chicks. Sigh.OhGeez!
Might be easier to brood the chicks separate from Astrid,
then to get that incubator dialed in in time.
I'd get the chicks away from Astrid and make/let her finish incubating those eggs. After her (1 minute) break this morning Astrid walked in the ward, settled on the nest for about 10 seconds then scooted off and over to the chicks. Sigh.
I pulled the nest box out back into the brooder room where they started and put the brooder plate over the eggs about 1/2" from the surface. That's all I could do.
I've never used nor ever wanted to use an incubator. But I'm bringing it home tonight. The person said they'd show me how to set it up. Do you recommend I run it a while to see how it holds? I have nothing to calibrate it with.
I won't put the psych ward patient on the eggs. She wants her chicks back. I let her out to stretch her wings and dust bathe last night. When she was done she tore around to the back side of the brooder run and proceeded to frantically try to get in. Not surprisingly the chicks stayed with Astrid.
Our oldest cat got her thyroid nuked but they didn't give us any replacement drugs. She did develop high blood pressure, not sure why, so she is on something for that.@bruceha2000 I have been very stable mine was nuked, radiation
