They do, but over here, 'cage free' doesn't always mean what I would think..the labeling rules aren't too stringent and it could mean simply having a teeny bit of room outside of a cage..not necessarily on grass. I think the average consumer is easy to trick the way eggs are labeled in the US - and many just buy the brown ones thinking they are healthier.

We don't have chickens yet and won't be getting eggs for a while but buy from a local farmer whenever we can. Up until a few years ago I always went for the cheapie .99 a dozen eggs at the grocery store..I just never gave it any thought or realized. :( Now I know better. It does cost more but worth it to me, physically and mentally.

Here's a link with more info: http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/confinement_farm/facts/guide_egg_labels.html I know in California they've established new rules too but since I no longer live there I haven't read in to it too much. It has to do with how much space they have in the battery cages, I believe.

Extra eggs...., I have looked into dehydrating them or freezing them for the winter, but the key words are, "looked into." I have not done this yet. They still wouldn't be fresh and you would have to scramble them, but they wouldn't be store bought. Or, I could just make sure to have six Early Spring chickens that would probably lay through the winter like my first ones did. The other babies through the years have always come later and didn't start laying until about Jan. Easier said than done with our Spring storms that can knock power out for days and I think that would be a nightmare scene trying to keep the babies warm by the fire, but I guess it has been done so maybe I should stop worrying...
-14 C here this am aka 7 F., had to look up the C, but sunny and beautiful!

Todays' forecast; freezing rain and ice pellets. Cold damp and unfriendly.

Best cure; Home raised chicken, with some dumplings from scratch. And some chocolate banana cream pie....with cooked chocolate pudding.

And the eggs taste far better. There are at least 4 places within 5 miles of my home where I can buy truly free range eggs. Several local restaurants serve only free range eggs.

Eggs - daily consumption. There is no way that I dislike eggs; although, pickled eggs are not a favorite. Poached or over medium are my favorites.
We were kayaking down a local spring run one summer with the scout troop,
I had thrown some boiled eggs into the dill pickle jar to later be used for potato salad, but my husband packed them for the kayak trip for lunch. They came out iridescent green and rubbery.

So the water is as clear and clean as anything you can imagine. (Imagine it) and as he lets a group of scouts start to over take us he tosses an egg behind him so it will float by.

As it starts to float by he points it out to the scouts, he pulls it out of the water and wonders out loud what is it? What could it be? then he takes a big bite out of it.
The kids make a huge racket. and almost flip their boats.

He can be an evil man when the mood hits him.
