BYC Café

I end up eating liver and onions quite a bit when I'm pregnant. It's one of THE best bioavailable forms of iron out there, and I get anemic pretty bad during all my pregnancies.

We live in the northeast, like way waaaaay north, and we have had over 6 wild fires in the past week! This has NEVER happened before, and "wild fires" in general are not common at all! Our fires don't seem to spread too far though, even if it really is dry, just because of the types of foliage that we have here. But one was over 40 acres about 20 miles from us, and we just got it contained, and one started about 10 miles from us last night. Another started a few days ago and it's steadily burning at 20 acres, and there are several more that are a bit tinier. But GOSH!

Sorry about the fires!!

Chickens are omnivores, so they must have meat protein. But their chicken feed provides that, so if you are feeding them chicken feed they are fine. I provide chicken feed and then supplement with kitchen scraps, and occasionally meat, on top of whatever they find free ranging (which at the moment is Mulberries)

I agree with your posts but I would like to point out that not all chicken feed provides animal protein. Some have gone "vegetarian" as people complained about it, thinking there were dead chicks or whatever in it. Don't know if that's why, they didn't specifically say that, but they did say people wanted vegetarian. Although I'm not sure if they're going to go back to animal protein, i thought i heard that. Nutrena Nature Wise is vegetarian too but the Country Feeds line might contain them (according to the website, just checked). Well meaning people thinking animal protein, products or by products, whatever, are bad and that chickens are supposed to be vegetarian. But that said I have mine on Nutrena Nature Wise Hearty Hen layer pellets which is 18% protein, the only one that high I've found besides starters or Feather Fixer, and mine seem to be doing great. That said I have been thinking of occasionally giving them some meat. Although maybe not with this heat we've been having

We're going to use a vegetarian feed but it's not because we think the meat is bad for the chickens, it's because none of us eat meat so we don't want to buy meat in our chicken feed either. Anyway there's a darn insect infestation here, and there's slugs and snails everywhere so they'll get plenty of those to eat. :)

Lol yes I did know some feeds were vegetarian, but i thought I save you all from my regular rant against people imposing their values on the animal world :D Most chicken feed contains all the nesisary nutrients. I just like to keep things more natural.
I feed meat mostly in the winter, because they get enough from their insects in the summer.

Those completely count

Chicken feed went vegetarian to prevent the spread of mad cow disease, since it is legal to feed chicken waste to cows, and ground cow parts to chickens.

Totally gross. Funny how it is promoted as being healthier for the chickens, when it is really to increase profits and to protect CAFOs.

I'm sure there are those that would point out that nobody has ever reported anything that could be described as "mad chicken disease," but I guess prions are equal-opportunity attackers, so perhaps this concern is valid.
