oh man........if I had to go through our compost pile and remove all the old bones.........lol....Looks much better without the empty pumpkin rinds, turkey bones and exposed mud!

our chickens have acces to the compost pile, so most of the veggie and meat scraps get picked thru...but it does get lots of additional poop from them.....we wet it down periodically, and turn it.....My run is an old carport and we've been dumping shredded leaves in it since we moved here. It's so dry, that things don't really "compost", they just break down smaller and smaller into leaf powder. Our prevailing winds are from the West, so every so often, all the stuff ends up on the East end of the run. Periodically I rake it all back even, and pick out all the stuff that gets buried - corn cobs, feathers, etc. Usually I pick up the bones pretty quick so they don't attract predators, but these got picked clean and dry and I got lazy.![]()
Our compost bins work well though, but I add water about every week most of the year.

it made it easier for us when we clean out the coop, and the growout pen, to have the compost pile out there, plus I already had a covered area built for a different project.Kinda wish we could do ours all in one place like that. I need the pile contained though, or it would dry out too fast. So kitchen scraps get tossed in the run, yard waste and poop board deposits get put in the compost bins, and all the cottonwood leaves get shredded and tossed into the run. Seems to be working OK so far.
