My parents used to collect gunney sacks full of black walnuts. They'd wait until the green skins turned black, then dad would drive over the sacks with his car a few times. The green skins would come off and the walnuts crack open (at least, that was the plan). It was our job (bro, sis & me) to pick the nuts out. We'd have contests to see who could pick the most.

Let me tell you, black walnuts are hard to pick out! But Mom could sure make the best fudge and baked goods out of those things.

Stain your fingers much ? Skins were used to make a brown dye for clothing, and can also be used to stain traps. Harvested lots of black walnuts as a kid.

Evening! Holy cow, I am tired. The day started at 3:30 to get the DS$ off on his trip, then breakfast, then 53 bales of hay on the truck, then 120 bales of hay on a trailer and that was unloaded and now I sat down to let the Aleve kick in. Alfalfa, sheez that is heavy stuff! I am outa here until morning... and the truck can hang out until tomorrow too.

I don't know what you guys believe in but please pray/think good thoughts for my cousin. She had emergency surgery today and has/had internal bleeding. Don't really want to go into the specifics here but if anyone wants to know more or exactly what happened you can message me. Thanks
