BYC Café

I used a couple heating pads in the spring. One I had for germinating plants, and the other I bought was just a large regular heating pad.
It worked well, but I tried it with too many chicks (35), and lost a few :(. Next year I'm going to use them again but will have less chicks and will be trying a different setup.

I like the better feed conversion idea!

I guess I was worried about integrating them with bigger chickens. For some reason I was under the impression that they were smaller or even bantam size? Maybe I was thinking of a different breed.

there are bantam Dominiques. But the full sized are full sized. The girls are bigger than leghorn girls.

I'm lucky that I have a small family hatchery within driving distance that raises their own or mostly sources from local breeders, so I do have a selection of good dual purpose birds available. But of course the quality isn't going to be as good as most specialized breeders.

I find hatchery Dominiques in general pretty nice. I wouldn't knock 'em.

I started looking at the heating pad brooder and came across a brooder plate/table. Has anyone used one of these?

I have switched to a heat plate. SO MUCH NICER!!! Less fire risk, less electricity used. Works well.

It is raining here. There may be mudslide over at the Sonoma and napa fire sites

ugh! Horrid. I wish people hadn't built on those slopes.

The Mud slides will not be because of buildings on hills. The fire destroyed the vegetation there. Mud slides will involve places Like this hill at the Sonoma raceway

The grass is gone that held the hills together.
