BYC Café

Sour thought you solved the house messing problem last time. You found if you took them out individually their manners were much better. Than if both went together and kept trying to out do their sib(?) Since they are your daughter's dogs maybe they would behave better for Princess. Just a thought

I love retrievers

Yeah, i have learned a lot in my life. I enjoy learning.

That’s definitely a good thing!

Difference between show or pet most show breeders we do all the testing build a better dog backyard breeder oh lets let the kids see puppy birth :barnie:smack

Agreed! BYBs are definitely not doing any favors to the breeds. I think no matter the type, health testing is still hugely important.

yes but people who are just looking far a pet not a pure breed super fancy dog cant afford a breeders dog

I can understand but on the other hand, breeder’s dogs are often cheaper in the long run because you (usually) don’t have major health and temperament issues that need to be fixed. They try to breed those problems out and try to select the mate that best compliments their dog instead of just whatever purebred (or not purebred) dogs happen to be around. Not that every backyard bred dog will have issues or that people who buy them are bad people or anything, all our dogs and brothers have either been rescues or BYB and we’ve had some great dogs, but it’s just issues are way more likely because the breeders usually just care about making money or showing their kids animals being born rather than breeding for health and temperament. Gator specifically has had a lot of issues. Now, a lot of those issues are probably because we neutered him way too early, but still. Some of them are not. His hips for example. And our last dog had bad hips too, terrible arthritis, couldn’t even get up at the end. Both from BYBs. Not that dogs from show or field breeders can’t have hip issues or health issues too but they usually health test and only breed dogs with good scores. Probably sounds like I’m really against anything other than show breeders but I actually think that some of the breeders that don't breed for that or even some BYBs can be good because some of the show lines are either inbred or are starting to have health problems (like cancer in show Goldens) but I think that generally they are a safer choice since a lot of BYBs just breed for money and I have personally seen aggression developing in both Goldens and Labs (both breeds that should never be aggressive) because of backyard breeders and puppy mills not caring about temperament. So I definitely have an issue with a lot of them. But I can understand not being able to afford a breeder dog but then again a lot of BYBs and mills charge as much or more as breeders for their dogs anyways, especially designer dogs (just a fancy way of saying mutt), but there are good dogs for cheaper out there. Just have to be careful and know what to look for I guess. It also varies a lot in different parts of the country. For example, in some areas you might be able to get a really good dog for $500, $600, $800, maybe even just like $200, other areas it might be more like $1500 or $2000, so it varies too, but for me personally, I think a dog from a reputable breeder (not necessarily show but health tests and does stuff with their dogs other than being a pet whether that’s showing in conformation or hunting or agility or obedience or whatever) is worth the extra expense when I am going to have the dog for at least 10-12 years, possibly longer. But that is for me. I also love rescues and will likely rescue a dog or two in the future but some of them are also as expensive as purebreds.

True I have had some bad experiences with BYB breeders
we only buy dogs from people we can trust especially being in a small town.

My grandmas last dog had to have surgery even though the people she bought it from said it would outgrow the problem like it’s parents. My grandma only bought the dog because it was a good price and it was the runt.
Nobody even gave it attention it wouldn’t play with the other dogs that were claimed to be its siblings. My grandma felt so bad after surgery and many prescriptions for other problems the dog now lives happily. My family doesn’t have a ton of money we own a business and farm.

If you have people you can trust and/or are in a small town then I think that is most important and I can totally understand the money thing. Sorry if it sounds like I was trying to shame anyone for not having money or anything, I wasn’t trying to and I totally get it, but I think it’s also a little different environment where we’re both from. Where you’re from, small town, it sounds like you have people you can trust and can find good dogs (and I imagine good farm dogs and working dogs are easier to come by out there, not many people would keep a useless dog), but here, being in the northeast (much more populated than furthr west) and being near several major cities, there are a lot of scams and bad breeders around so I guess I’m just a bit more cautious of them cause there’s so many bad ones here. Although it sounds like you’ve had some experience with bad breeders there too.

I do not breed dogs now left that with my Belgians but was very selective even a pet home people waited 6 to 7 years for pups from me pets I sold for allot less but altered them before leaving me there are so many in shelters or rescues breed and designer dogs alike people will pay 1000 and still dump them because the kid does not play nice or the dog bit the kids most often fault of the child not dog
