Kripes almighty how many ways do I need to say this walking from thread for awhile
THEY ARE THE SAME DOG AS

I’m sorry Penny, I really am not trying to upset you or argue or anything, but I guess I just found it kind of hard to believe that the varieties haven’t changed at all in 30 years or however long they have been separate breeds over here and knowing how AKC can sometimes change or ruin a lot of other breeds (not every breed of course) BUT if they genuinely haven’t changed and all still have that great work ethic and drive or energy or temperament or whatever then that is awesome and I am genuinely glad. I don’t know that much about the breed, especially the other varieties, and really only ever hear about the Malinois so I didn’t know if the other breeds were as intense. I guess I found it kind of hard to believe people would keep them as pets if they were all as crazy as the Mal but I guess they are still a rare breed so maybe only devoted people keep them which would be good. And maybe it is like IM said in that it is the traits of the individual dog or only exceptional parents or certain bloodlines or whatever traits being selected and not necessarily the breed of the dog. Either way, they do seem like a great breed and I guess I probably will not get one if they are all as intense as the Mal

I guess it’s not really that hard to believe though considering German Shepherds also have at least 5 different lines that are all vastly different from each other but yet still the same breed and of course show and working Labs, Goldens, Border Collies, Spaniels, etc. and of course the show dogs that can and do still work even though people say they can’t.

Sunny is lovely, I knew a breeder in Ohio that was developing a line of long haired Rotties
They also had proper tails. I found them to be calmer than shorthaired Rots. Maybe because he was also breeding for temperment.
Sunny was okay when I got given him. He needed watching around other dogs for a while.
He had been walked on a lead mostly and I taught him to walk at my side without a lead and this made him better mannered with other dogs. I assume because he had the option to run or fight. It was a bit of a risk, but it worked out well.
He was good with people but was a bit over protective. I was sad I couldn't bring him here.
He moved in with a guy I had known for some years who was good with dogs but had his last dog die a while ago. I saw Sunny at Christmas. He looked very well cared for and his new keeper hadn't let him get fat which is often a problem with Rottweilers.

I know they are but haven’t the Mals been bred to be different? Stronger, faster, meaner or whatever? Maybe not, I really don’t know. I believe the other 3 varieties are still the exact same dog and breed, but I think the Malinois variety specifically has been separated and bred for a different purpose is all I’m saying. I never see any of the other varieties in the police and military or doing protection sports is all I meant. They’re the same breed but our military breeds a special kind of dog for very specific purposes. Heck, maybe the military Mals are even vastly different than the average Mal, and not an accurate representation of the breed, idk

Hm, that is true, maybe it is not so much the breed but the individual traits of the dog. But I still think that Malinois have been bred to be different.

Yes they have been bred for specific physical traits. However, not every athlete has atheletes for parents. There are still puppies from these super stars that never make the grade. They're the same dog, the same breed, but they have the characteristics that the military/police desire for what they're being used for.

For example, our Lab was big and had a serious drive to hunt. He was good at it, bred from champion field lines for a specific purpose. Not all of his litter mates were so. It still depends on the characteristics of each dog, not the breed. My silky terrier, bred as a ratter originally, will retrieve birds in our yard :idunno it's about brains, desire and ability.

Always a good feeling when you can bring them along, even if you can't keep em. Sounds like you made a good match for him, all things considered.

Maybe a little research might clear it up.

That’s true!! Not every dog has the same traits or personalities!! I bet a lot of those SEAL team dogs never make the cut, I bet it’s like one puppy out of the litter, if that, bet there might not even be one in every litter. Those ones have super high standards for the program. Of course, the ones that don’t make the cut probably go on to be regular military or police dogs or narcotics or something, they’re not usually totally useless or pet level, but I am sure in other breeders of working dogs, not the super high level ones, they probably do place pets or active dogs.

And wow weird only a few dogs made it as hunters!

Maybe a little research might clear it up.

Thanks, I actually just found that one right after I posted on here. That one seems to say they are the same but then there is one comment on it from someone from Europe who says they consider them different there and another who heard the Malinois had a bit sharper temperament so idk, it is all a bit confusing. But that video was helpful. And then I did find some videos of a Groendal doing a lot of work and training so I think they are all very smart and active and trainable :) i think they are the same breed and maybe because some Mals are selected for military work, it makes them seem different from the others. But I do think Mals are more similar to dutchies. But i think i need a Belgian Shepherd, any of them.
