I was going to ask if your rooster wasn't cutting it with regard to the gene furthering.
One poor guy to about 24 or so ladies I think is asking a bit much. I'll need pullets for next winter. I want a variety of birds so I ordered exactly what I wanted.
I'm getting the Ameracauna male to make future generations of EEs and I'll keep at least 1 of the Millie boys if I end up with cockerels and odds are I will. Having my luck all the little boogers will be cockerels.

Ah okay that makes sense. Do you like the leghorns? And that’s true!! I am sure they will be fine!! I didn’t mean to sound negative or bash the breed or whatever, a lot of people really like them!! They seem like a good breed. Just for me, I have a small flock and mostly pets but we are looking to add some more layers as our birds are 3 years old, and only have limited room, so for me I had to prioritize and narrow it down to the best layers and/or breeds I really want. One day I do really want to try Wyandottes but also because we have a small flock and have experience with bully hens, I didn’t really want more breeds that could potentially be bullies. A lot of people say that theirs are not, seems about 50/50, but I didn’t want to risk it. Which is disappointing as they are beautiful. But I think I am going to go with Partridge Rock, Speckled Sussex, Easter Egger, Delaware, and White Leghorn. That’s down from the 10 I had ha thinking of adding a New Hampshire Red back in too but idk. We current have 1 Barred Rock, 2 Black Australorps, 2 Buff Orpingtons (was 3), and 2 Easter Eggers. I really love the Rock and she is intelligent and a good layer so I want to try a different color Rock, really like the Partridge Color, and then I’ve been wanting to try Speckled Sussex for years, and the rest, we decided we wanted to try to mix up the egg colors so we know who is laying and we love having the green and blue eggs and personalities of our EEs so figured we’d add another one. Haven’t hit order yet. Might try to pick up some ISA Browns from TSC too when they get them in as they are supposed to be excellent layers but they have a minimum of 6 so idk.
I can hardly be a judge of general breed disposition as I only have one of any true breed. My SS is a freaking brat! My Delaware is head pullet and was renamed Draco because she can be so nasty and doesn't have a nice sweet cluck like the rest but this gawdaweful dragon roar.
As for my 2 white LHs, I absolutely love them. They were a bit wild when I brought them home in October but have since calmed down and are very inquisitive and talkative. The really little one likes to follow me around. And of course they are both little egg machines.

Ohhhhh, where did you steal that!
Lucky me, it was here when we bought the place.
We picked up an 8x8 shed and had it placed on the other side of the property out of the area I turned into the chicken pen. Another fine structure! It will become the lawn maintenance equipment shed. A guy down the road wanted it gone to make way for his new shed. The next door neighbor strapped it to their tractor and hauled it 1/2 mile up the road and placed it for us. All it cost me was a dozen eggs! And the foundation but still.

That’s disappointing to hear about the SS and Delaware :( I like the looks of the SS enough though that I think I will try them anyway and I think they are supposed to be good foragers and mothers too? May have to rethink the Delaware though. But that is good to know about the LH! Maybe I need to add more of them! :D

When I say Sissy is a brat that just means she's the first to fly out of the pen, the first to sneak out between my feet and take off and she WON'T be caught. She's a nice bird and a good layer. She's just such a freaking BRAT!!
