KDOG, I thought about it, but most of the rescues are older dogs. Older dogs are fine for many situations, but I think it would be best to get a pup, or very young one, so I can teach it that the chickens belong here, and that it has enough energy to keep up with the grands. Dh was a dog trainer/handler in the military, and later on for the Sheriff's Dept. here in Florida, so he'll want to do a bit of training.

Yup, that's what tends to happen when humans try to breed other creatures for particular characteristics.

And exactly!! I agree 100%. The big dogs just do more damage when they do it but I’d much rather have a bully breed or Shepherd than a Chihuahua lol although that said I think a lot of those little dogs, Chihuahuas included, can be great dogs when bred and raised right and treated like dogs instead of babies and trained properly lol but the problem is so many of them come from puppy mills and pet stores and have so many health and neurological problems and also go to people who treat them as accessories lol

ALSO.

I’ve always said that a big dog would never in a million years get away with jumping up (well, some big dogs do get away with this lol) or lunging at other dogs on leash, or growling at people or protecting their owner or whatever, but yet when little dogs do it it is “cute.” Awww he’s protecting me!! Or “just doesn’t like you” well that’s dangerous lol or when freaking out on leash (usually a FLEXI 20 feet away too), behavior is either ignored or it’s just “oh Fluffy stop it!” Or it’s considered funny and laughable.

Exactly! We had a JRT that was fine as long as people didn't try to pet him. We had him at the store and this lady was going to let her little girl pet him without asking. I said please don't allow her to do that he's not friendly with kids or most people and she read me the riot act about having him out in public. Just because the dog is in public and not obviously aggressive doesn't mean it's ok to pet it without asking first. He would never go after anyone or bark at them, but he didn't like to be touched by strangers.

Frankie would love everyone in the world to stop and say hello and pet him, but because he's a bully people avoid us when we take him to Home Depot.

It's a bit about the dog but it's also about the owner. You have to know how to handle a dog and those small ones can be MORE of a handful than the big ones.

Afternoon pot has been brewed - have at it. All lawns are mowed. Tomorrow Dani goes to daughter's and Princess and I head to Maryland. Grand daughter graduates high school on Tuesday. Wednesday we pick up Dani, and Thursday is her surgery.

Last time I looked at UK statistics, the King Charles spaniel bit more people than any other dog.

A King Charles is very similar in size and temperament to a cocker as I recall.

IM, your JRT should have had a sizeable, highly visible yellow ribbon on it's collar, leash, etc. The yellow ribbon means it's not friendly. I agree though about people teaching their kids not to pet anyone else's animal without permission from the owner. My kids were only to pet their own dogs, unless I gave them permission. Even if the owner of another dog said it was ok, that did not mean it was ok with me. I spent a lot on keeping all the shots up to date, all the preventatives, and didn't want them petting some dog, and bringing something home to our dogs. For the dogs I did trust them to pet, the rule was that they had to wash their hands immediately afterwards. If that was not possible, they were to go straight in the house, straight to the bathroom, and wash those hands.

Wow she sounds like an amazing dog!! I love the shepherd breeds. Love the retriever breeds too ha I think those two categories are probably my favorite breeds of dogs. Most of the dogs I want next are shepherds or retrievers Aussie, Golden, Lab, GSD, English Shepherd, etc. even looked into the Belgian ones.

Although unfortunately I think most insurance companies won’t insure Shepherd breeds or charge way more

Wow that sounds like a nice place! Thank you for the offer! Will have to keep that in mind, although I don’t know when I’ll be getting to VA. I think I have a cousin near Alexandria and DC area but I’m not sure exactly where. I think he was near Alexandria but recently got a house and not sure if it’s also in that area. But yeah. Somewhere down there. Probably nowhere near you though right?
