BYC Café

For those of you who read my tale of woe regarding the newsworthy mosquito hunt I'm pleased to report that a twist of fate resolved the problem.
Despite my superb finely honed hunting skills this little fecker evaded every swat attempt only to return a few minutes later to suck a bit more blood out of my body.
I discovered that the favorite resting place for all the mosquitoes is in the bathroom. I happened to be having a shave, the mosquito swat close at hand when I heard that familiar zzzzzzztttt. Dropping the razor into the sink and quickly arming myself with the swat I surveyed the well lit walls looking for the little blighter. The walls are gray and plain so even this comparatively small mosquito was easy to spot. It was on the wall about six inches below the wooden beams that support the roof. I gave it my best shot. Whack! but it dived out sideways. What it didn't notice was the spiders web a few inches away and there it was, caught! I jarred it in alcohol and later this week I'll get it under the microscope.

:lauTake that you little fecker!

90* here. 50% humidity, zero breeze, no AC & no cooling off at night. I hate this time of year. :hit It'll be an uphill climb from here until mid October.

I know I shouldn't complain but I'm gonna be a whining baby for the next 2mos.

I cannot take the heat anymore either went to town pick up my tramadol and bandaids without latex... We have two window air conditioners one in our computer room one in the living room, Son has on for his room I turn a fan faced out of the room on high just keeps air moving that is enough for BF and I

A breeder of Marans in Red bluff lost 15 or so at that time. It was closer to 115 F up there
Fortunately I've not had one die due to the heat here. They know where to go when it's hot. We are lucky here to have excellent quality shade. The best spots provide layers of foliage, often a tree above a clump of bushes or the cane that grows here. The sun just doesn't penetrate and because it's not solid material the heat doesn't reflect or radiate from the foliage.
I mentioned in the featured thread that for those here that keep chickens in runs they pile Holm Oak branches over the run and put a fern like plant on top. The Moroccans build clay domes with entrances at 90 degrees or do as I do and let the chickens in the house.
Most of the farm houses here in Catalonia are ruble built with two foot thick walls. Most have outbuilding tacked on and the chicken use these to keep cool.
The wood or plastic style coops that most on BYC build are very unusual here.

@KDOGG331, sorry you lost your hen. We aren't all obligated to cut up our lost birds so don't ever think you have to.

Thank you DobieLover. I appreciate that. That really makes me feel better because you’re right, I felt kinda obligated, like I should find out what killed her, but I just couldn’t do it. With the hawk attack on Penny, I knew right away it was some sort of predator but with this one I have no idea so I kind of felt like I should find out but I just can’t.
