The two hens brooded them together, and the rooster got in the nest box too!So cute!!
I can't wait until Barb takes the chicks out to meet the family the first time.

I hope the migraine is better soon!Had to get chores done first. Took a hot shower, trying out the new migraine pill now...got my fingers crossed. I take a maintenance drug for them and this is the first one I've had since I started that a couple of months ago.
Morning Cafe, thanks for the coffee Shad
Looking forward to hearing from Dobie this morning!
Roomie, we get a lot of requests for Arnold Palmers in the restaurant. I make the tea from loose leaf and the lemonade from scratch...mix them together & you have an Arnie! Very good![]()
There are at least 2. I don't want to lift her in case someone else is trying to hatch. This is the second one.

Daddy knows he's a daddy! They all know the chicks hatched. They loitered in the coop this morning instead of going straight to the run. And I only know this because I can spy on them!!! Coop cams are fun!
They're adorable Dobie, congratulations! I was a nervous wreck when I had my first broody.
The rest of the girls knew there were babies and loitered as well, but my broody was the Boss so they didn't get the stink eye. She was so proud to show them off!
Barb is still on the nest. She's got Cali's egg still under her but I couldn't see the shell fragments from Amelia's egg. There may be three chicks under her. Cali's egg is cracked so I'm hoping it's hatching. The two chicks I've seen came from the two WLHs, Lucy and Peanut. Daddy passed on his feathered feet and muffs but I didn't think to look for the fifth toe.
When I hand fed Barb again this morning, after she ate a bit she took a chunk of the mash and broke it up and started clucking to the chicks. She is such a good momma.
She was number 2 in command so I am hoping she won't have any problems protecting them. Lord knows she was hell on wheels when she was taking her broody breaks! Everyone got the hell out of her way.
We have three! And they also have 5 toes.
And I was wrong on who's eggs hatched. These chicks are from an EE, a white Rock and a white Leghorn. The second WLH egg didn't hatch, hasn't pipped. I'll give it until tomorrow then toss it... far, far away from here.

I'm so happy she turned out to be a great momma and not a chick killer. She seems to be doing everything right. You never know unless you let them do their thing.
I only work three days a week and I paid my dues already!
I have to drive north to pick up my dog food order that I missed last week with all the preparations getting the house cleaned up for the visit from my floating friends. I have to drive 2.5 hours one way and come back with about 130 # of frozen food!![]()
Well honestly! I don't know what you are all congratulating DL for. It's not like she's had to sit on a pile of eggs for 21 days, not to mention put up with Fabio's pulling her feathers out while he learns the ropes so to speak.
Congratulations Barb and Fabio.Pfffttt incubators.
However, congratulations are in order for DL for persevering with Fabio. You now have a proper chicken family.
As second in command Barb should have no problem with jealous hens. What DL may have a problem with given she's got quite a lot of chickens is a sever outbreak of broodiness. I don't know, but here that stuff seems to be infectious.
I'm looking forward to the post from DL where she writes I've got six broody hens and I'm ripping my hair out trying to make them understand that I just can't convert the house into one giant coop to accommodate everyone.
I'm really pleased for you DL. For me the whole cycle of natural hatching and knowing who is related to who and how many generations there are is part of the wonder of chicken keeping.![]()
Thanks, Shad! I'm having such a great time watching them!
DON'T CURSE ME!!! It took forever to break Astrid.
Thanks. Having my luck they're all cockerels.

At least the maintenance drug seems to be helping to reduce the frequency of them. I hope you feel better soon.Had to get chores done first. I don't think my experience would have been as pleasant if I had to deal with Fabio in the nest area with Barb. No, definitely not pleasant at all.The two hens brooded them together, and the rooster got in the nest box too!![]()
And who is first in command? Fabio? I am sure he will help protect the chicks as well. They seem to know they’re their babies.
Wow that is a long drive and a LOT of food!!!
Not Fabio. Rhoda. I call her the HBIC. She will sometimes peck my hand when I groom Fabio on the roost. She ALWAYS sleeps right next to him. He is hers. Period.
It's a 9 week supply. I feed raw hence the frozen part. I'm in a co-op that makes deliveries to Binghamton every 7 to 9 weeks but I missed the pick up last week. I'm starting to think AD is contagious.
Oh wow that’s awesome!!
And that makes sense then. Figured raw when you said how much and frozen haha
I wish I could feed raw but it’s so expensive. Plus just have the cat right now.
