Not surprisingly, I bang on about chickens in real life too.
I get asked some really stupid questions about chickens from some people but a few others listen to what I have to say and realise that my interest is knowledgeable and passionate. One question I get asked is what is it that keeps you so fascinated. It's a very difficult question to answer with any brevity.
Today provided one example.
I was sitting at the computer next to the house nest box when Mel who had been fidgeting in the box for a bit stands up and after a few moments to get fully awake jumps to the floor. Mel pecks when she wants something and while it's normally food there are other reasons.
Mel came over to me as I sat and pecked at my trousers. I know she isn't hungry because she had already been up and out this morning for poop and food.
I stand up and Mel heads for the door. Initially I thought she had given up on the sit and wanted escorting to her tribe.
When we got outside Mel did the usual precautionary check before running over to the flower box in the picture below. There are no other chickens around so there is no rooster to keep watch while she baths. I take a my coffee outside and roll a smoke. When Mel sees I've sat down she gets in the flower box which is a favorite dust bath. Every now and then her head appears over the edge to check I'm still paying attention. She finishes her bath and comes and hangs around the chair I'm sitting on grooming and shaking out the dust.
I give her a few minutes, stand up and collect my cup and make my way back inside. Mel follows and a few moments later is back in the nest box.View attachment 1902347

Oh my goodness, that is the cutest thing ever. How fun to see pictures with that story! I think it's safe to say that your birds trust you.

If you do they will change your mind on how 'ugly' they are, personally after getting them I feel now they are the most exotic awesomist birds I ever had.
You wanna hear a funny one, my brother in law stopped by when I got my first batch of them. Had a 4x8 broader going in the garage with 15 of the buggers. He didn't have a clue as to what they were, told him they were baby ostrich. Before he left I tried to convince him they were just chickens he laughed and said 'yeah right lol'. No seriously they are naked neck turkens, chickens.
As he got in his truck he shook his head again and said 'your going to need a big fence for them' ....
:lau:gig
Ha! That's awesome :lau You guys probably still laugh about that! I did always think they were kind of oogly, but IM's posts of them changed my mind. They really are unique little things!

My tomatoes are so good that once they are no longer fruiting I can not stand to eat tomatoes. Plants are loaded with green tomatoes so hopefully I can store enough to get me into December. I have 14 plants - most of them taller than me and still growing. 3 are non flowering/non fruiting. Wonder what's going on with that ?

The words 'neutered tomato' come to mind. :idunno

Yeah I was wondering if it was still cheap. With everything as expensive as it is these days it’s probably cheaper to buy real hotdogs or burger haha
Spam has been re branded as an Hawaiian specialty food. Canned Salmon used to be cheap too

I actually had a fairly good store tomato this week.

There is some work going into making store tomatoes taste good again. I think it is here at UC Davis
