I started the day off okay. I got the chain done. Cleaned out the ducks and Tribe 2.
I got Mag's toenails done and a quick coat of Vaseline on his legs.
Somebody had laid an egg in one of the nest boxes in Tribe 2's coop and walking up the steps towards the main house who should I find skulking under the bushes but Bracket waiting to go and lay an egg. So, as one naturally does, I sat down next to her and had a chat.

I was mainly interested in whether she, being the most senior hen in her tribe, would consider doing me a favor and let a hen called Myth move in.
The story of Myth is long and complicated. Myth is essentially a bantam and lived with them many years ago. It didn't work out and Myth did what all tribeless chickens do here and looked for her nearest relative and move in with them. Blood/breed will get you in the coop but it doesn't mean those who are closer genetically to the usual occupants are going to like it much.
Closest to Myth is Gedit and she's the boss in tribe 3. While Gedit got the same feather pattern and colouring she grew to Marans size because her father was a Marans. Myth's father was a bantam. The other thing about Gedit is she has never laid an egg in her life.
She also has deformed toes.
Myth is having a hard life with Tribe 3. Basically none of the other hens like her. There are reasons.
Bracket has fallen out with Myth before and backed Myth down so Myth moving would seem possible.
This is Gedit and Myth.

This is just Gedit because she's lovely.:)

This is Tribe 3 as they are atm. Unfortunately one of the cockerels at the back is for eating. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Two brothers without sisters tend to run amok. I'm hoping with just one, he will pay a bit more attention to his tribe and a little less tearing around.

Oh yeah, Bracket said she'll think on it.

One of the many things that amaze me about the chickens here is the oddities in behaviour that they will put up with in other tribe members.
Bracket is a complete fruitcake. Really, I know she's had her neurological problems and all that but even so, she's barking mad.
Myth is just a nightmare. She's a baby killer and some may think me mad (probably a lot now I come to think about it) but I'm sure the other hens know. Not one mother hen will tolerate Myth anywhere near their chicks.
Despite the current resistance to anthropomorphize nobody who has kept chickens and spent any time with them can say with any honesty that chickens don't have personalities.
