BYC Café

There used to be someone on BYC (an American) that had a walkout basement where they kept their ducks. How convenient that would be to keep an eye on things. Just walk down a few stairs, open a door and there they are!

I think if you kept things clean, there shouldn't be an obnoxious odor.

That would be cool! We have a walkout basement. Maybe I should do that. :lau

And true but there would likely still be some and/or at least noisy. Hard to keep the barnyard vibe at bay lol but I guess if you are doing that, you don’t want to keep it at bay. :D I love my animals but not sure I’d want to share a house with them LOL

Besides cats and dogs and small animals. But even then, I’m not sure I’ll ever have an indoor cat again haha I hate litter boxes in general and Luna is pretty stinky. :sick:oops:

The ground floors were plain earth. You just sweep them out. All the little microbes in the soil take care of the rest. The main problem apparently was the earth drying out and for that they just used to wet it.

That’s awesome!! Bet it wouldn’t smell much then!! :D

Guess I was thinking more traditional American barns lol

It's kind of ironic that people keep cats and dogs in the house. Many let their cats and dogs sleep on their beds.
People here kept cats and dogs but they stayed downstairs or outside; mostly.
I let the chickens in my house but they don't go in the bedroom. Yes, I know they crap everywhere but if they didn't I probably wouldn't mop the floor every night.:D

There are still people here who have outdoor dogs and cats and I think that’s fine as long as they are taken care of but I love having mine inside. :)

I love being able to pet/cuddle/talk to them whenever I want too. :lau

And might be weird but mine are family to me lol

Change her diet. What is she currently eating?

Currently she’s eating this for dry and various grain free cans. Right now it’s four health (TSC) grain free and taste of the wild. I usually rotate her food quite a bit and always try to stick to grain free and I rarely feed fish/seafood if at all (she doesn’t seem to like it anyway and I prefer not to feed it) but it seems like no matter what she eats, her potty smells. I should clarify she doesn’t smell herself, doesn’t have bad breath or stinky or greasy fur or anything, but she reeks when she goes to the bathroom. It goes away eventually though but still. Idk. Maybe all cats smell when they go to the bathroom but she seems especially smelly for some reason.

This particular food I saw at our local feed store and thought it looked good and sure enough she LOVES it. I’ve also fed Wellness CORE (original, she hated the indoor formula when I tried it lol) and Earthborn Holistics Primitive Naturals for dry but I try to mix it up. I like high protein foods too.

But she was on Meow Mix and total carp till about 4-5 years ago and her poop smelled then too.

But she was also way lower energy. She seems way healthier and happier since switching to high protein, grain free foods. But I’ve been trying to occasionally use cheaper ones, hence the TSC cans and I’ve gotten Walmart ones too but still grain free.

She does seem a bit depressed since Gator does but she’s been a bit better lately.

I feel like she’d love a friend though haha

Hmmm. Both Rascal and Christofur were pretty stinky, not Checkers though. Stinky enough that the cats would run from the litter box when they were done. And if Rascal was in DW's lap and suddenly ran, DW soon after got a big ole whiff of P.U.!!!!

We are now feeding ProPac Savanna Pride and Deep Sea Select for dry food and Dave's for canned. I buy them at the local farm and garden store where I also get my barn animal bagged feed. No more stinkies though it seems Rascal's was also related to her thyroid problem. Pretty much stopped being stinky after the radioactive iodine treatment.

I wouldn't change up the food too often, I think that is pretty much guaranteed to mess up their innards until they get used to the new food.

I expect so Meg. He will spend Christmas with the main house. They came back last night.
In case nobody had worked it out a proportion of the main house are my relatives. I can't even begin to explain how much I wish they weren't, but they are and there's an end to it.
My half brother isn't a bad man and he is welcome here in my house. I can't say the same for the rest of the main house.
They have been back less than 24 hours. This is the damage report.
They made a bench seat in the sheep shed some time ago. I took it out because it wasn't made well enough to take the weight of the sheep. They stand on it with their front legs so they can see over the front wall. One of them decided to put it back in this morning. This afternoon the sheep knocked the bench seat off the wall. One of them likes to put the sheep to bed when they are here but often the sheep won't go in for them. This evening was such an occasion. I got told that one of the sheep was limping. I went to look and in the middle of the floor was the bench seat with the screws pointing upwards lying in the middle of the shed.
The duckhouse I built has doors that fold down to provide a ramp into the duck house.
The hinges are strong but if a person stands on the edge of the door/ramp (there is absolutely no need to stand on these doors) they won't take the weight of a human, much like a ramp to a chicken coop.
I went to put the ducks away tonight and the door is lying at an angle where one hinge has been broken.
They are having guests around for dinner and they've been rushing around presumably thinking about the dinner party. They all talk too much and leave things to the last minute.
The chickens, ducks and sheep are generally terrified of two of these people who move too suddenly and don't think about what they are doing. It's like watching an imbecile on amphetamines when they try to do stuff. I had already seen them send tribe 3 into a panic flight when they were showing their guests the donkeys. Tribe 3 moved up to where the ducks are and were there when these same people went up to put the sheep to bed. When you frighten chickens they just rush in any direction to get away from the threat, much like sheep do with a strange dog.
At roost time I Gedit was missing. I found her in the pond. The duck shed is very close to the pond and that is where the door got broken. It got broken while the chickens were up with the ducks.
Gedit died in my arms as I tried to warm her up and dry her out about an hour and a half after I got her out of the pond.
Sorry if this brings anyone down. I've lost two gorgeous hens this week due to human stupidity. I can live with the wild predators. The half wit humans I find very difficult.
I'm so sorry for all the trouble the main house people have caused you, especially during the holidays. It pains me on a deep level when I see any animal suffer or die needlessly. You've had to deal with more than your fair share. :hugs
I hope you've seen the last of it for a while.
