BYC Café

The mayor of Chicago, Lori Lightfoot has just removed Christopher Columbus statues from two parks "until further notice," ???

At least 10 states and more than 140 cities now celebrate some version of "Indigenous Peoples Day." Hopefully Chicago will do the same.

The Chicago Tribune posted a photo of several Native Americans who were turned away from the Columbus Day parade in 1970. Seeing this now, I have to say I had no idea Chicago even had any Native Americans. I'm wondering where they had lived, since parts of Chicago have not been kind to any group who is different. Sadly that still holds true.

If I recall the 70's were when I really became aware of the opposite sex, probably spent all my thoughts on them.

If it wasn't for 007 Sean on BYC, I probably wouldn't have given much thought to Indigenous People. Fortunately he opened my mind to them and have I been pursuing their culture ever since.

Still find it odd that in my public schooling, no mention was ever made of Native Americans or even Jews and the Holocaust. Guess in Chicago(and probably elsewhere) we were given only a "sanitized" education.

I'm getting off of my orange crate(platform) now - just makes me wonder what else we were never taught in schools. Some years ago the movie "Hidden Figures," introduced the Black women who were largely responsible for the early success of the space program. At the end of the movie, the audience en masse said "we never knew that."

No wonder I'm nowhere as smart as I might have been- if given privy to this knowledge.
Never knew you could have chickens in Chicago either, although the Chicago neighbors who poisoned our dog (and failed - the vet saved him) would have poisoned them or done horrible things to them as well.

For now I wish I could :smack myself for being so stupid.
It's an interesting business is that history stuff DD. Very odd how it changes from culture to culture and sometimes generation to generation.;)
It's a bit like the Internet these days. Someone writes something, a moderator doesn't like it and it gets deleted. It never happened. Cultures have been deleting those awkward bits of history for years.
We did get taught at least a bit about what happened in America, but strangely we didn't get taught about the atrocities committed by the British in Australia. It's one of the reasons I prefer science.

Yes! That is where forensic archeology comes in-- figures out where History was written by the winners to sanitize it

Can we say 'FLOOD' ? I mean Isaias is whaling us with 4" of rain/hour. The sump pump in the new section of the cellar became overwhelmed, and cellar started flooding. No problem as I have 2 other pumps in the old section; however, all of the Princess's impending projects are on the cellar floor. :barnie Lots of moving of 'stuff' and squeegeing of the cellar. Rain had backed off a bit, and sump is not overflowing right now, but we are supposedly in for at least 3 more hours of rain. :he

You will get the amount of rain in a day that we get in a winter! We were below normal last winter-- Normal is 21 inches for the year

Ah dd, don't do that! We only know what we've been told/taught. Ignorance is not stupidity.

I recall learning about native people - called Indians even though no where near India and the Holocaust. Of course the mistreatment of the indians and breaking of the treaties when it was convenient for the white people in power wasn't the subject. Definitely the "white man's" sanitized version.

I've got another one for you (my own and more current).

Did you know that women of African descent use nasty chemicals to straighten their hair? I didn't, I just ASSUMED that some had curlier hair and some straighter same as people of other ethnic backgrounds. <Shudder>

And "driving while black"? OMG!!!! (can we say that here??) I had NO IDEA until I heard about it on the now cancelled NPR program "Tell Me More". I had been listening to it for several months and suddenly realized that the topics very frequently related to people of color/minorities, neither of which define me. And I thought "I kinda sorta know what those people must think when they listen to almost anything on the radio because we are so "white centric". Very enlightening. The host was Michel Martin, now a host on Weekend All Things Considered. IMO she is the BEST interviewer around. I wish they had given her WBUR's On Point program. I don't know if it was offered to her or not but she would be perfect for that show.

And another eye opener for me. Have you ever walked out of a store with one item and a receipt in your pocket, no bag? I have, many times and never thought twice but another commentary by a black man (*) said he was checking out and the cashier didn't want to give him a bag for 1 item. Nope, he said he would for sure be assumed to have stolen it if it wasn't in a bag :th What a world, assumed guilty based on skin color.

And the George Floyd murder? A guy accused by a cashier of using a counterfeit $20. Not even resisting, not even an "interview" before throwing him on the ground? Could be he was knowingly using counterfeit money, could be he had no idea. In either case it didn't warrant anything more than minimal restraint on the part of the police before determining if he had actually committed a crime. Makes me sick and it is only 1 incident, most don't get the high profile public airing.

* I hesitate to use African American because not everyone of African descent in the USA is an American citizen, it seems wrong to suggest they are just because of their skin color and current location. I worked with a black man from Haiti, he was not a US citizen and therefore not an African American.

It is cut into foot rounds to dry out.
Not 16"? That is much more common for firewood. 3 rows 4' high and 8' long is a standard cord.

Looks like Tonya is next up for the Isaias hit list. More for wind than rain. We weren't expecting any wind higher than mid teens but Isaias has shifted west from the original track. Now showing gusts to mid 30s this evening and a 49 MPH gust at midnight. From the look of the current track the center will come straight over us.

Given the wind forecast change we've moved SIL's tent off the back deck and into the barn where the tractor would normally be. No she won't be sleeping on the rocky uneven surface. She's been quarantining here (from VA) over two weeks, had her Covid test last Thursday, negative as expected. Thus she was able to go to her parents' place at the retirement community yesterday to visit. Per the community rules she can go M-W-F.
