BYC Café

My mother never did much for any of us when we were little. She was always drunk or had passed out and we were left to our own devices.
I guess that is what made you so functionally independent. Not the way one would like to attain those skills but it worked out for you.

But there's a saying, "when the president sneezes, Wall Street catches a cold," and that's so not what we need right now.
Nope, but it happened anyway.

DS@ is off of the fires for the season, their crew maxed out the alloted days. I
I can see how they would be beat half to death but there are still a lot of fires. If the crews max out, who is going to fight the fires?

I know I don’t know what the future holds and nothing’s a guarantee so maybe it’s foolish to use those words, but these two things pretty much are, at least for me.
Nothing wrong with that decision Kelsey. Besides possibly saving your health it will save you a ton of money.

In fact, it's quite fun to remain sober then tell all your friends of the crazy things they did. They never knew I made half of it up!
Which is why I can't see why people get plastered. If you can't remember what you did, how do you know if you had fun?

Thank you! That’s a good point! Both those things are extremely expensive now! 😂

And yeah I agree. I see people all the time completely wasted (and often annoying  ) at shows and I’m always like why would you waste money on a ticket just to get completely trashed and/or sick and not remember a thing?? I mean, I know it’s their money and I get having a few drinks for fun or whatever, but see so many just totally not there and it makes no sense to me

The Brecon mystery (disappearing chick) was solved last night: when I went to shut up the coops, initially I couldn't find Brecon again (or Kenfig, the partially sighted pullet). But this time when I lifted the lid on the nest box of the coop that they both use, I found them both squeezed into the box behind Eve, the broody who usually is aggressive to all her juniors. She takes her chicks to bed before everyone else, so B&K must have been allowed in there, not accidentally trapped there. So I guess the other evening Brecon was actually under her, with her own chicks 😲 I need to re-evaluate my view of Eve!

What was your former view of her? She sounds very tolerant.
It reminds me of Barb, my very first broody. This is her with her first batch of three chicks when she went into a nest box to lay her first egg after raising them.

I hope they show up!

The woman last night did. We'll see how this morning goes. I will message her before leaving to make sure she's still on board. That is when they will back out if they are going to.

I am going to a swap early tomorrow, hope I can get rid of these excess roosters.
Do your cockerels usually go for meat or flock roosters?

Good morning Cafe. Coffee is ready.
It is a bit colder this morning at 40F. And it rained again. Funny. We had a solid 10 day stretch without a drop of rain and got the rear portion of the roof at dad's house nearly done. No one could work on the rest during that warm, sunny dry spell and now we'll be frantically working through intermittent showers to get the rest done this weekend... in the cold.

good luck! rain in for the day here too ☔ And thanks for the coffee!

I wouldn't describe her that way! On the plus side, she's gone broody in May and Sept last year and this, so she's reliable there. And she's a decent layer of light brown eggs when she's not broody. But when broody she flies into explosive action if anyone lower in the pecking order (or me!) put a foot wrong, such that she's broken an egg and trampled chicks (the latter survive though, I think they must be made of rubber) in her zeal to defend them :th She looked after the May clutch (Kenfig is one of those) well till they were 9 weeks, then drove them off. Maria adopted them for a while, allowing them to hang around with her and her then 2 week olds. But Brecon is one of Maria's chicks, who is normally close to Maria. Perhaps we have an occasional reverse adoption / co-parenting thing going on here... Or maybe Eve is just too terrified of Maria to mess with one of her chicks when it squeezes behind her:gig
