We have some around here that have only 4.

Village and hamlet are the same term "Dorf" in German, there is no difference, although the number of inhabitants might differ greatly.

Our village consists of only 7 houses, and with just a few steps we are out in the wild.

7? How many sq meters is this village and how far is it to the next one and somewhere big enough to buy groceries?

It is about 4,5 km to the next supermarket, but it is only a small version with limited range of goods, unsmilar to these gigantic ones you have in the U.S.
Just one of your Walmarts is much bigger than our entire village!
