BYC Café

Morning. Thanks for the coffee.

Skittles had a midnight run to Cornell last night. When I got home from work yesterday I noticed he was off. He had a very funky, very muscousy diarrhea when I put him out. It reminded me of intestinal shed in the chickens just lighter and more of it. About 30 minutes later, he vomited water on the floor. He vomited at least 6 times between 6 and 9 and was walking very guarded like his abdomen hurt. I gave him 16 mg of Cerenia at 9 to see if I could get the vomiting to stop. After an hour he didn't vomit but still was looking bad. That's when I decided to take him to the hospital.
They took 3 abdominal films and blood work and all looked good. No fever. They gave him another antiemetic, some sub-Q fluids and sent him home.
He was worse when we left.
He slept very still and at 6 I reached under his bum and stuck my hand into a puddle of bloody diarrhea that absolutely reeked. So I got him outside, cleaned him and took care of what needed taking care of (including washing the bed sheets) to kill time until we could leave for the local vet and be there before they opened.
He is now in the local hospital with a slow drip IV. I requested a mild pain reliever and potent antibiotic be given to him. They need to monitor him for fluid build up in his lungs because of his heart condition. He hasn't had any of his medications since yesterday afternoon.
We'll be picking him up a little after noon today. I hope he will be more stable by then.
This is a repeat of Bella's episode and I don't have any idea what the connection is. Skittles couldn't have gotten into anything like Bella did because I haven't had them out to the fields to run since Monday.
I hope he pulls through DL:hugs

He's home.
He still feels bad but is a little better.
He's had IV antibiotic & simbadol for pain and we gave him 100 mls Iactated ringers subQ before we left. They sent him home with two more bags of fluids and I'm supposed to give him 200 mls subQ every 8-12 hours. My (nurse) sister said she'd help. He'll have to have subQ fluids until he can keep himself hydrated.
The bloody diarrhea keeps leaking out of him so he is on a puppy pad over a folded up towel.
The vet thinks he'll start feeling better late tomorrow or the next day.

Is this because of something he ate DL?

Thanks a bunch for the coffee. I surely could use a mug or two... or three.

He's a tiny bit better. Still hurting though.

I am trying to manage the bloody reeking ooze coming out of his backside. He got the loose top sheet on the bed again so I was up a bit after 2 this morning pulling it off and getting it in the wash. The rest of what oozed out was caught on the pad/towel I put down on the fitted sheet.

He's interested in eating so I fed him about 2Tbs of his chicken/rice mix last night and he ate it and kept it down. That also makes getting his meds into him easier.

I went to my sister's last night and between her, her husband and I we put 150 mls subQ into him. The plan was to put another 200 in this morning at 8 but the roads are a literal sheet of ice. They look like glass. So I'm stuck up here on the hill and left all the IV supplies at her house.

But Skittles ate again this morning and is showing no signs of nausea (the cerenia is helping there) so I'm going to give him 20 mls of water/broth every 20 minutes to keep him as hydrated as I can throughout the day. That's the best I can do.

For the intestines, I'm going to give him a very small amount of psyllium in his tiny meals to help absorb the liquid in his GI tract so he stops leaking. The poor little guy has had numerous butt baths to clean him up.

I've also done three loads of wash to keep up with the stinky old towels I've been using to protect the bed and couch and the ones I use to dry him with after his baths.
You just can't have too many towels even with just chickens.

Good evening Cafe.
We had some sunshine today and it was a bit warmer.

I don't think so. The only opportunity the dogs have to eat something inappropriate is when I run them. He hadn't been out for 3 days before he started getting sick.

Good news is, he's been eating little meals of chicken/rice with beef broth all day and has kept everything down, had two monster pee sessions and hasn't had any bloody leakage. His farts could clear a mall though.
He also seems in less pain but certainly still very uncomfortable. I hope he's over the hump now.

Glad to hear Skittles is looking up, DL. Did they ever get the roads deiced?

Had to show you this glorious beard!

I didn't realize the next one up was photo bombing her :lau

Reminds me of a meme/quote I read: "I hate when you offer someone a sincere compliment on their mustache and suddenly she's not your friend anymore."

Sounds like maybe things are looking up for Skittles.
