Not a bad idea. Or are there plans to fill it in?
We've talked about, "Hey, we could turn it into a _____." The basement looks to be in excellent shape, but we don't know until we get down there. Of course, if the years go by, and it gets rained and snowed on, it could end up cracking/shifting/falling apart just like the house did.
Who said, "Oh, you'll have so much free time in your retirement!" was joking, right?
DH said it would be great for a greenhouse: put a wood burner in the basement for heat and some kind of dome over it. Ummm... dear, do you see all the trees here? 100 year old, big tall, sunlight blocking trees? Unless we cut them all down, this won't get enough light to grow anything. (And DH hates to cut down living trees. Not to mention that he doesn't have a chainsaw that would handle a roughly a 30" diameter tree.)
It could become a root cellar. The only problem with that is our lack of planning ahead and the fact that it's 1/4 mile from the house. "Dear, do you want some potatoes with dinner? Oh, damn, I need to go to the corner store; there aren't any here at the house."
It would take a LOT to fill it in. I'm going to guess the footprint is 20x30 or 40. The FD Chief said he thought it was about 9 feet deep. Not sure where we'd get that amount of clean fill. I see signs out by the road, "Clean fill wanted." Do people get that for free, or are they paying for it?
