Um, ok last post before I go off to enjoy some cozy domestic time with fresh baked bread and an amazing supper we have planned. First one really since the chickens came...wow, it's been busy. Been busy for anyone else?

Anyway, I invented a bread that I wanted to share with you. It's based on a zucchini bread recipe and any zuc bread recipe will do, but the simpler the better. I call it ... drum roll please ... My Beet Poet Bread - You replace the zucchini with a firm squash of your choice (you can even still use zucchini) and beets! Make sure you grate both beets and squash raw into a nice pulpy mass together into a bowl, not too pulpy though or you won't have anything to put in the bread...squish out all extra liquid from squash and/or zucchinni and beets.
Optional add: one hot pepper of choice chopped really small, I mean *really* small
You get a delicious, nutritious lovely pink tinted bread.

I wonder if my DH would look as good?
Oh I know he would

But he just doesn't have the hair any longer.
Safer to keep it cut shorter. he has had it pulled quite a few times by patients on the Ambulance and decided it wasnt worth the pain and trouble.

All that canning will be great this winter, if we get into a depression I will have to make a road trip to where the food is, LOL

I was in brownies when I was little. I remember the ice candles, so cool. We used milk cartons, Ice & the wax & whick. Some sort of coloring. I also remember learning to knit with a spool with nails in the top & a hook.

marko said the hookers, polo said maw from the planet zingfinagiedoo! And she thought up a awesome escape plan, and stowed away on their mother ship that was in route to earth to try and kiddnap more BYC Hookers, but before they could land their ship Maw dove out the small hole in the landing gear and behind her left a small ticking egg and as they looked at it in curiosity it exploded turning the inside of the ship to yellow eggy goo. And the BYC Crocheters were safe again to have more crochet swaps, and to talk about their chickens!

Greetings all from Balad Air Base, Iraq...

Got an invite from Darlene (Scrambled Eggs) to join you all.

I am really not into crocheting..but, I have in the past. (maybe 20 years ago, and it was just a shell pattern I did over and over to make a few scarves and baby blankets).

What I have been doing with my spare time here is making battle bracelets.. made out of 550 cord or parachute cord. I do this through our chapel; the idea is to make one, and make another for an injured troop in our hospital. They often call these buddy bracelets too.. The tradition is to make 2 at a time, hence one for the injured troop. I facilitate a class every Sat, and so far, we have had alot of success with them. I wear my battle bracelet everywhere I go, and people ask me all the time about them. I will have to post a photo of them one day so you get an idea of what they look like.

Anyway, Athena is my real name (didn't get too creative), and home is Jacksonville, Fl. I am 48, and I have 4 children (3 dau and 1 son), and 3 granddaughters. Both older girls are married and live in the panhandle of Florida, my son is a senior at Georgia Southern, and my daughter is in her second year at Florida State.

I love raising chickens and I can't wait to get back into it, a small flock of a couple doz, plus I want a couple (neutered..lol) bunnies and a garden of course. I am big into heirloom vegetables and container gardening. Right now at home, I have one 18 yr old dog.. Sachi, who is half shar pei, half rhodesian ridgeback. She is the backbone of our family...and 2 manx cats, Max and Nhia.

Aside from work, and what brought me to this site, is just surfing the net trying to find out about chickens, and then I happened into this forum interested in making my own detergent, soaps, scrubs, etc...

I love to cook, so I am forever looking at recipes.
One of the first recipes I will try is Darlene's Apple Butter. Easy to prepare with just a few basic ingredients, plus, I love cooking in the crock pot! I can almost smell the apples and cinnamon as I post...
I have never had apple butter (maybe its cause I'm originally a yank??? Do I remember ever seeing it in Mass???), so it will be interesting. I want to make it on one weekend when I know my kids will be home. Put it on just before everyone wakes up, and they will have that smell hit them, when they wake up. Just an awesome way to wake up, and know, they are back home!!
Kinda like how I feel now... with coffee. During my deployment here, I have been living in a metal conex, and one of the things I miss the most is waking up to the fresh smell of coffee brewing!

Speaking of crock pots, I make a kalua pork in a crock pot to die for. My girls make it often, and my son does as well. When he makes it for his college housemates (5 boys and their gf's), its gone in ONE day!! It tastes as if you have been slaving in the kitchen all day!! Just yummy!!

I also have taken advantage of another thread here and that is one on Bento Boxes.. I am half Japanese/half Greek, so, I am familiar with bento's.. I just think its neat to see how popular they are getting with someone who is non-asian. How awesome to be able to share ideas.. and of course kids just love them.

Didn't mean to write a book,
Have a great weekend, and I hope to be able to participate in some of the dialogue here..

Athena

I totally am not going to let myself get this far behind again it feels like I have been reading posts for the last 3 hrs, anywho aleast we know how much fun we have here if it takes me that long to catch up after only a few (a week or so) days. So here goes, Karanleaf that greenhouse looks totally awesome, and wayto go getting DH to help out on that. And I love to colored hot peppers I might have to get some for my FIL for christmas he likes those hot things. Congrats Qeen Scoot I see I will have to change some names here, sorry for the delay and I won't let it happen again. BTW watch out for those sweaty teeth, or you might wipe out the court with the drool and breath LOL!, Ris DH hooking in bed and he wears a kilt girl you have it made. Sorry to hear about your hen sometimes the stress and then the relief can just be to much, but glad to hear about your new arrivals and you will love them I am sure of that. Scrambled I don't think those aliens are going to be messing with me again
smile.png
I sent them home tail between their legs and knocked out most off the headlights too so maybe they will get lost and never return. I hear you on those hairyleggied spiders don't want nothing to do with them AT ALL! I love the purple christmas spider thought very nice. What is the link to that page so I can read the story of the christmas spider? and I may be joining you soon in the yarn horders room as I just went Yard saleing and ended up with 2 more tubs full of yarn. Gapple thats so awesome that you and you DDs get those cool chances to aud. for those gameshows good luck and I hope one of you gets in. Nat, I tryed the girl scoots but alas the group had 3 meetings and then stoped, but I got in to FFA and 4-H and marching band and boy did I love those and I am now a 4-H mom and am constantly busy with that. Alpacachick good luck with the house sellling and i hope you win the lottery so you can move closer to you babys I just don't think I could live with out all my babys here and I have a ton of them and wouldn't have it any other way. And watch out you don't poke an eye out with the rapid transit hooking there! LOL!
Leepsy I did get your squares and a check would be fine whichever is easist for you. adn sorry to hear about your sister, and I know that it does get better it just takes time my FIL had a stroke on the way to a suragry (sp?) to remove a brain tomer, and yes it took a few years but he is better than ever so we are here for you and I will keep both of you in my prayers. GreenTree goodluck on your trip and I was just in hot springs over the summer and there are a few good places for overnights with horse jsut google and you should find them easily.
EastTNchick now be careful that you don't accidently can youself up with doing all that winter food or we maynot find you until the spring swap as you have been at it for a while now! LOL! I am with you on the midnight rooster party there as sometime during the summer mine picked up that nasty habit as well, but I soon got used to it and the Bloodhounds belloring with the cyotes soon drowns it out and off to sleep i go. Wlcunni75 glad to hear from you too. and sorry to hear about the kiddo I will be praying for a quick recovery, my youngest is suffering from allergies and has been for 2 weeks now poor thing is just not herself almost seems hollow in her eyes so lots of vit. soup. liquids, and rest, and a teaspoon of honey from the nieghbors bees and she will hopefully be back to her high energized self. AmyQuilt Sorry that you are having to leave for this swap but, life happens and we want you to feel free to stay with us here on the thread when ever you can and good luck with the move gal and I hope things will start getting better for you. see you in the spring. Wegotchickens I think I might have to get my DH one of those as he likes to make salsa and he loves new kitchen toys too.

and Welcome to all the newcomers glad to see new faces and new hookers, your are more than welcome here and yes we are crazy crocheting chicken and yarn hordering fools, who love to chat and have fun doing it so great to have you Lakecountrychick, Okiemommy, and Athena, athena I would love to hear more about your battle braclets and would love to help out if you need it. And last but not least Men and kilts and eye candy!
I will have to think on who I would drool over in a kilt although the guy in the new movie made of honor, collin was so hot in his kilt. but patrick demsy yuck noway. not ever agian do I want to see that. my hottie is Johnny depp but I don't think he would look that good in a kilt. No I am sure of it. And whats up with the socks and boots with the kilts no socks please I like that old leather boot that goes up to the knee no socks showing thought or it will totally ruin the moment. But girls i loved those pics. well ladies I think I have got caught up and will finish in the morning, so Good night all my Crocheting Chickkidies and you can sleep soundly tonight as Maw has gotten rid of those peskiy aliens and we are all safe now. Love ya Gal take care and May God Bless and Be with Each and every one of you. Maw.
