Yes. Sometimes mine hit 6 feet tall, 4 leaves lol plenty of flowers and okra so I haven't messed with it. But we don't eat much of it. Chickens LOVE it chopped and fried with jalapeno lol

Thanks! I was just curious, mine do this every year. Something I never remember to ask others about. Fried with jalapeno? Sounds good! The chickens might have to fight me for it. The wife & I eat quite a bit, Bbqed, steamed, stewed not fried so much.

Cowboy cookery, Dutch ovens & open fires? Very cool! I bought a set of lodge stuff, oh, probably 10 years ago or so for camping. The plan was to figure it out at home, then take it camping. I've not used it to date....nor have we been camping. Ok, camping once or twice. You would think that once you're retired & the kids gone, you'd do more of what you like to do. Not the case! There's the garden & the chickens are amusing but no fishing or camping. Now we got the time but not the energy & we like to be comfortable.

Hi al! I think winter is coming here in NH; heat is on and I would realy like to be sitting in front of a fire in the fireplace. Tomatoes are still coming thou... I have other stuff growing for the ladies... and will start to pull the plants up and throw in the coop soon. HUGE find yesterday. The church next door to where I work is selling pumpkins. they said I could have as many as i wanted of what they are calling "rotten" ones in the back. They just have tiny soft spots! I suppose I wouldn't buy one for a jack o lantern; but the ladies will love them! I feel so lucky!

on another note... I agree with the camping comment. Its so much fun, until you have to go to sleep... !!! much rather be in a camper with a nice warm bed,,,

have a great night! GoSox!!!

We should be getting a frost here this week, and that will be the end of that. I had planned to garden all winter (kale, etc) but I never did get around to seeding anything into where the pigs plowed first...besides, I have a feeling I should just let that cook for the winter anyway. I need to put some stuff into the garden boxes on the deck, and maybe I can get lettuce and stuff like that during the winter. Those are on wheels...I could roll them inside if a blizzard is predicted.

I am trying hard to not turn the heat on...

The baby tree is hanging on. Hopefully it makes it through the first winter! It will have a very interesting scar to show off, lol.

Frost? ABC said you folks got snow there. Yeah, fresh animal manures are cause for concern. We have access to so much information with the internet, conflicting information. Often the more I research the more confused I get. Concerning chicken manures I have found sites stating; needs to be composted cause it's too hot, needs to be composted to kill bacteria, small quantities won't pose a problem, don't plant an area for 90 to120 days after removing the chickens, any bacteria will be destroy once the manure dries out or is frozen, odds of becoming ill from a small home flock manures are slim to nil & on & on. Enough to boggle the mind! After all that reading ya still gotta take your chances. I don't have room to be waiting 90 days! What about all the other manures that end up in the soil, like cats & wild birds?

Better break out the fleece & long johns. I detest long johns, never made any sense to me, especially if you're in & out of a heated environment.

Your rolling garden boxes sound pretty cool!

Maybe you should paint that trunk.

We use the rabbit waste...directly in the gardens now, the plants LOVE it.
The chicken waste I compost in a barrel composter (few weeks) then use it, never had a burning issue.

I too read so much conflicting info I usually try it out on test areas 1st lol

The snow missed us, lol. It was not that far north though! And if it was raining here, it is cold enough we would be getting snow.

I had not thought of painting that tree, that would be a good idea for it. I'm totally new to tree care.

Yeah...my dad never worried about veggies he grew in ground fertilized by whatever we got out of the coops and fields, pretty much right away. But now, yeah, if you don't let the field rest 120 days (required for organic growers, actually) you will DIE of some horrible fecal-borne disease. I don't quite believe that, especially as I don't factory farm. But, well, pig poop seems more....um...fresh to me than coop litter. I DLM my coops, so when I clean them, it is half composted anyway. I have used that as is on the garden.

I'm also kind of looking to slow down outside activities, lol. I have had three quilts in progress for a couple years...I would like to finish them this winter! So I'm cool with lettin the pigs plow, mulching as they go past, and come late February, getting some late kale and things like that in.

Rabbit manure is the best!

The boxes came from Lowe's and are called City Pickers boxes. I got them to grow carrots in...the ground here is not good carrot ground, unless they are the little round ones. Worked great, as we had beautiful purple carrots this spring and summer.

Hi! You folks that live in the colder climates can post pictures of your winter wonderlands & those of us that are in the warmer areas will post pics of our year around gardens.

Sounds like you got lucky with the pumpkins alright.

We started out tent camping. Had a RV for awhile, every time we put in the street the cops would put a warning on it, it started sitting for long periods so we finally got rid of it. I can not go camping with a tent just as easily as I can not with a RV & it's cheaper and easier to store.

VERY serous stuff you are in the Boston region, Some days I would like to switch climates with you! but we snowmobile too... which is hard to do without the snow! I guess all regions have their ups and downs.

I started an herb garden this past spring.. looking for ideas to add to it. Do any of you add herbs or other plant material to your chickenfeed? I do pick off the marigold flowers and pull apart an dry them, and then mix in with the feed.. but wondering about anything else? ideas??
