BYC Member Interview - WVduckchick

I guess I can show the start of our latest project: The "finished" one is old, but I just got it painted this weekend. Then we are adding the new one for my Lavender Orpingtons, for when we get them moved. Still have to put the roof on the new one, cut in doors & windows, all that good stuff. Then build the run around the new one, connected to the old one. That way, if I want to cut through the fence and let them mingle, I can. But the plan is to leave the LO's locked up separately. The Comets and Roos have an automatic door, and they free-range all day. The coops aren't the prettiest things, but they will be functional! Quick funny story I will add... I was painting Saturday and heard a commotion over the hill. The chickens had all gone wandering and one of the roosters would not stop crowing. I thought some predator was nearby or something. I grabbed the pistol (off my hip) and walked toward the woods, in the direction of his cries. As I got to the wood line, I passed by hubby's brush-hog, covered by a tarp. I heard chicken noises coming from under the tarp! Peeked in through a gap and saw the other rooster and one hen.... let's just say they had made a cozy little spot on the grass clippings on the brush-hog. So I guess they found a spot to be alone, and the other rooster was looking for them! :D
Nice job. Funny story:)

That is a funny story. These creatures are a never ending source of entertainment. I love the way your coops are tied together with the same color. Forgetful? When I leave my kitchen, and head to the bedroom, by the time I get there, I forget why I was going there. Or, I'll leave the bedroom with something in my hand. By the time I get to the kitchen, I've lost it. And we live in a small house!!! I swear my hall way has a giant black hole that sucks both thoughts and things into an eternal void.

That must be what grabs socks on the way to the laundry room too! :D

You asked about my LavOrps on the egg thread, and I didn't want to overload that thread, so I thought I'd add some here:

I hatched these the last week of April.... 9 full lavender and 1 black/lav split. Ended up with 3 male, 7 female. The black/lav split is a female.
Here are a few pics. Enjoy! I'm anxiously awaiting eggs from them!

You're killing me! So beautiful! I'm just smitten with them. Thank you for the pictures, I'm drooling!

WV:  awesome stats on gender!  And I'm jumping through hoops to tweak my hatches to yield good percentages!

You can't really control gender, can you? Just hatch more! :D

I always heard no more than one roo to less than 10 hens, but with LOs, I was reading that they aren't nearly as aggressive with the hens and each other, and multiple roos are not as much problem. I would really like to keep all 3 of mine, maybe I'm just grasping...
