polar ice cap
:lau
All the melting today just gave us 3 inches of icy water on top of the ice pack
In my area I got some melted down to grass in the front and part of the side of the house but the back got all the Drift snow (which is still there about 10") in the storm and my 'path' is also just a glacier with an inch of water on top too.
Mine are in a covered run so no worries about 'Winter' this year for them lol

My chickens are also in a large covered run but the blizzard blew a lot of snow into the run through the open vent areas. Also that and the melting ice seeping into the run makes for some muddy spots. My chickens are spoiled and they are accustomed to having at least an hour out of the run confines everyday. They go out for a couple of minutes and come back into the run because it’s all still ice covered. There is some grass emerging today so I’m hoping the warm temps overnight and again tomorrow will clear up some more. My project this year is to expand the chicken yard surrounding the coop and run so they can “free range” there instead of my backyard.

I’ve been holding my breath on that so thank you @tigger19687. They’ve had some bad outbreaks in the UK and I anticipated it would just be a matter of time. I’ll be ordering bird netting now to cover their chicken yard to keep wild birds out. I guess the good news is most birds are heading north this time of year.

I just ordered enough bird netting to cover 50 by 100 feet of grazing area. That will keep the wild birds away. This will let me have the chickens out of their covered run and forage in the grass safely. Fortunately we don’t get many aquatic birds around here but there is a large turkey population. They don’t come too close to the chickens.

Can I ask where you odered the bird netting?
