The cool thing that's happened in the latest generation was dividing elemental moves between attack and special attack. Prior to this all elemental attacks such as fire/water/electric were always special based. So, a pokemon like Gyarados (water/flying type) with a strong attack stat is no longer stuck with moves like Surf which feed off of special attack. Instead that pokemon can use waterfall which draws from its attack stat. Arcanine with its uber attack stat can actually use flare blitz (attack based fire move) instead of flamethrower which would use its weaker special attack stat. He also can get extreme speed which is the fastest move in the game to "finish" off opponents that are still barely standing. So, Arcanine has really improved since the bad old days. What I like to do is pick a few that I really like to use and then build a team around them. I stay away from "ubers" like Mewtwo...though in official competition you can use 2. I just personally think they make things boring, but to each his own.
