Here is a little something I wrote up to help old fans understand some of the "newer" changes to the game

Individual Value (IV)

These are the core stats of a pokemon. Just as in life pokemon are individuals. Some have high values in ever stat and some are just weak in ever stat. Most pokemon you catch will be very average which will hurt you in competition and the game where you will be facing faster, stronger versions of your pokemon. IV values are a number from 0 to 31. Zero being the worst and 31 the highest value. The easiest way to check if your pokemon is any good or not is to check it BEFORE you use it for battle. Once you battle a pokemon you will accrue Effort Value (EV) points which will augment your stats and will throw off your impression of its overall quality. The lower the pokemon's level the less accurate your estimate will be. At level 100 you would have the clearest picture of your pokemon’s quality. Here is one checker of many out there

http://www.serebii.net/games/iv-calcdp.shtml

Parent pokemon will pass their stats onto their children to some extent. The generator will draw stats from each parents and randomize some as well. But, if you are breeding it is a whole lot easier if you are starting with parents with at least some redeeming value. In Gold and Silver and later you can purchase trainer items (power band etc) which can “lock” in values from the parent wearing them. I advice you only use one item because that will give you an 100% chance on one stat. If you use two (one on each parent), it will lower the chance for a stat to be passed from parent to child to 50% for each. Usually I will use one item on a key stat and on the other an everstone to try and try to control personality.
You can get the power items for this purpose in the battle tower for 16 battle points a piece. There items also affect how much EV you get if you battle while holding the item but in terms of breeding pokemon they do as follows:

Power Weight locks in Hit Points
Power Bracer locks in Attack
Power Belt locks in Defense
Power Lens locks in Special Attack
Power Band locks in Special Defense
Power Anklet locks in speed

There are also ways to exploit the pokemon games clock system to force it to get you the stats you want when catching pokemon. I choose not to do that, but you can research that on your own if you are interested.

Nature

You may have noticed that pokemon will have personalities/natures. These natures can augment one ability up 10% and one down 10%. For example, a pokemon with an Adamant nature will have its attack stat increased by 10% and its Special Attack decreased by 10% whereas a Brave nature will have its attack stat increased by 10% and its Speed decreased by 10%. Some natures are neutral and will not have an overall effect on your stats at all. Once you have an idea about which nature you are looking for you can attach an Everstone to a parent pokemon and it will pass on its nature to its “offspring” 50”% of the time. You will also notice that on the newer Pokemon games that the nature affects can be seen visibly on the game screen (the increased stat will appear in RED and the decreased stat will appear as BLUE).

Effort Value (EV)

The last determinate of you pokemon’s over all quality will be effort value. There are 510 points to spread around and each stat can acquire a maximum of 255 points. When you faint an enemy pokemon your pokemon will accrue effort value points. For example, fainting an Onix will give the pokemons involved in the fight +1 to their defensive EV. If you use pokemon without training their EV first, you will accrue a random set of EV that you may or may not want. For example, a Machamp will have a lot of points in Special Attack it will acquire if you played with it through the regular game (without training it first) which will lower its over all potential in other stats. There are berries your pokemon can eat that will remove EV points in a particular stat. So you can always retrain your pokemon but you will need to breed berries. Other things that affect effort value to speed up training are:

Wearing the power items during battle I mentioned before (add +4 in the stat they list to every battle)
Wearing a macho brace will double your EV gains per fight
Getting infected with Pokerus (a virus acquired during trading usually) doubles your EV value
Eating Vitamins will give you 10 points in a particular stat

All items stack with one another

Other considerations during breeding

The Male pokemon in the breeding pair will pass on some of its moves to its offspring. These are refered to as “EGG moves” and they are the only way to get certain moves on certain pokemon. For example, to get the move Mirror Coat on my Milotic I had to use a male Corsola who had Mirror coat. Before you breed plan out which moves you would like so that you have the right moves on the father to begin with.

Pokemon with the ability "Flame body" if they are party leader will hatch eggs faster than other pokemon.

There are a lot of other things I am certain but this will give you a place to start if you are interested in building a better pokemon for your team.s

I've played through the game now. What I really like is that the flow is story driven and not HM driven. The HM's come into play after the Elite 4. The 3d graphics and moving pokemon are cool. I also like quite a few of the new ones. There are far less "useless" pokemon like Farfetched in the new batch. Oh and the TMs being reusable is great. Once you beat the game you can start collecting the really good TMs for breeding and they are yours forever.

The game post elite 4 can be a bit rough because the trainers and plot continues and they all have level +65 pokemon. I traded a few of my better pokemon from other games to help out. Once you get beyond the elite 4 you will see a ton of wild pokemon from the other games....and at high levels so you can tell how good they are right off. I think its great. Overall I think this is my favorite pokemon game yet.

Thanks for the chart, Gordon!

So, if I want a good psychic type nature, I would want one with either a Bashful or Careful nature, right?

Well it really depends on the pokemon. My two favorite psychic types are Espeon and Alakazam. Both are "glass cannons" of sorts. They are fast and have high special attack. With those pokemon what you really want is a personality that lowers Attack since you don't care about that stat. The other thing you might want is to accentuate their strengths. So a nature such as Timid that would raise Speed and Lower Attack or Modest that would Raise special attack and lower Attack would be ideal. The idea being trying to end all fights in the first move by being either faster than your opponent or overwhelmingly powerful (even without a stat raising move first). There are attack based psychics such as Gallade(psychic/fighting), so you have too look at what you are dealing with. There are also different ways of winning that may rely on defense. Confuse ray causes pokemon to "hit themselves" 50% of the time. Add to that paralysis or attract and for the most of the fight your opponent will be spinning their wheels. Usually you drop in a toxic or burn and let your opponent self destruct. In that case you'd want something with extremely high defense/special defense and/or hitpoints. I have a Jirachi (psychic/steel) like that, but there are certainly others that can play that kind of a role. Each strategy would have an idea personality/nature.
