BYC question and answer thread....

All chickens have spur buds and sometimes female hens will grow spurs.its more common in the Mediterranean breeds but sometimes females will develop spurs. As for her leg sticking up keep a eye on her and as long as she does not become paralyzed that way or develop any paralysis she should be fine. Watch her for any more abnormal behavior if you notice anything else please post. hope this helps.

OK now I have a question:
I am getting eight new chickens in may and would like to know at what age I should get them. I do not want to buy a brooder just so I can get them at a younger age so....
Chickens need a brooder until they're about 6-10 weeks of age. So any aged chicks after that would probably be fine for you.

You would probably be best off getting some started pullets/birds. Started birds are sold by some hatcheries, and other people sell them too. They are often sold at near-laying age (around eighteen weeks). Getting started pullets eliminates any problems of brooding, heating, etc.
