I used to watch my grandmother hand piece quilts. Each piece was about 1 inch in blocks of 4. She used fabric from clothes that she made us as we grew up. I still have mine and I very clearly remember the yellow flannel Humpty-Dumpty pajamma's and the dark green shorts and tank top with the duck applique. I'm nearly 47 so the memory is still strong after 42+ years.
I pieced this during a quilting class I attended on Saturdays for a few weeks. We never quilted, just pieced! I'm shy and I don't usually talk much at first. On the first class all these ladies came in with their very fancy sewing machines and their wheeled carriers....I dragged mine in....my Singer Stylist 834 that I bought just after I got married in 1982...Oh, the looks I got. I decided right then that my quilt would be the best. I wanted to show everyone who quietly snickered...including the teacher who informed me and the class she hadn't seen "one of those in 20 years" that it wasn't the machine, it was the person behind it!! Not to brag (much) but my quilt was the prettiest and I had quite a few compliments on it even from the teacher!
...before you ask, yes it is hung up with tacks!
I'm bad.
ETA: The Singer is still the only sewing machine I have...except for the peddle one that doesn't work.
