I used to refuse to pay someone to quilt mine, as well. Plus, I had in my mind, that if it wasn't hand quilted, it wasn't authentic.
Unfortunately, time takes a toll on the old hands and eyes and also with having 2 small children (1 being autistic), it's just impossible for me to do the quilting
It was a big blow to my pride to take the first one in to have it done, but it is beautiful! I just have to finish the bindings and I"ll post photos.
