Kassaundra, your Oklahoma star made from neckties is really neat. Is it paper pieced? That was a cool tie with the dragonflies and damselflies on it, and the various colors of the triangles really make it pop! I've never tried anything with neckties before, but I've seen some spectacular quilts made with them. We had a quilter do a "trunk show" at our quilt club in Durant, OK, and she had several made from ties. She also showed us a "Dear Jane" quilt that was just gorgeous. I've made some small blocks, but I'd hate to make a whole quilt from them.

The dragonfly tie was one I made for Gary. That was the left over fabric from it, since he still wears the tie. You don't have to make a whole quilt for a bed, there are throw size blankets, pillow, table runners, wall hangings, framing it like art, window valances, etc......


Yes it is paper pieced I love that technique.

Farmgirl you have some very lucky kids in your family! They are all wonderful quilts, and the Crane quilt especially appealed to me. Don't even get me started about paper piecing.....grrrr, I just can't do it. But that doesn't mean I can't admire the quilts made using it. Dragonflies out of neckties? That sounds fantastic!

Katie was over this weekend and was she ever a busy little bee! She got her strips cut into squares, then made her blocks yesterday. Today she sewed her blocks into rows and got her borders put on. She was already to layer and get to quilting, but since I never expected an 8 year old to stick to it so firmly and get so much done it two weekends, I had to beg off. I need to cut some batting and backing for her and hadn't done that yet. She wants to learn hand quilting, so that's what she's going to do on this quilt. She got the top done so fast that we have plenty of time before Christmas.

Sewing on the borders. She had the worst time understanding why we measure the quilt top down the middle to get the size we needed to cut the borders. I ran out of ways to explain it, so I finally told her that the Quilt Fairies make the borders into bad ruffles if we measure the exact outside edges.

Yayyyy for another generation of quilters! She's already planning her next one!

Thank you. She really focused on this project. She'd get a little irritated with me if I made her take out a seam, but then I get irritated with myself when I have to take one out too. For the most part she sewed nice straight seams but if her block shifted on her then we'd go from a quarter inch to almost nothing - just the very edge had stitches and they weren't holding. So those she'd have to take out and do over. At one point she looked up at me and said, "I wish somebody would invent an UNsewing machine so I could just put the part I did wrong under it and it would take out the stitches." Me too, Katie!

Today I'll head out to the sewing camper and cut her some quilt bat and backing.

Update on Katie's quilt. She wanted to hand quilt it but changed her mind and decided to machine quilt it instead. I really wanted her to try hand quilting - I want her to get comfortable using a needle and thread but she had a valid point - she can't always work on it everyday and she wants it done before Christmas. So she won. She'll still get some hand sewing experience when we sew the binding to the back.

The quilting is finished. She got the binding stitched to the front. I was thrilled that after showing her once how to miter the corners she got it on the next three! I had to help her join the strip at the end though. I wish I'd thought to take her picture doing the binding.

I just found your site. Great site. I'm a quilter. Ne I'llerwing /quilting room . Live on a small hobby farm. I have a bassett hound. When I go upstairs to the room he howls!. Doesn't climb stairs
We have renovated the farm house. Still working on it. New to farm life and raising chickens But love it.Joined a prayer shawl group Making quilted prayer shawls an quilted prayer squares with yarn in the squares they say a prayer and tie a knot in the yarn
This will use up my material my husband says. Gee then I'll have to go get more. What a shame

Well, Katie got the quilt done for Kendra for Christmas! She was actually wiggling in place on the floor waiting for Kendra to open it. Kendra tore into the wrapping paper, the box popped open, and she yanked that quilt out of there. She sat there for a moment or two, then waved the box around saying, "Box, box!" We didn't expect her to "get it" but someday when she's older and more responsive she'll understand that her quilt is so very special. Katie was fine with her reaction, too. Everything Kendra had opened was a toy of some kind until the quilt. It didn't have buttons, lights or sing, so she just set it off to side - after Gramma got one picture. Katie's face says, "I made this for my little sister!" and Kendra's face says, "Move the corner of that quilt, I think there's a toy under it!" After I got my picture, Katie picked up the quilt, folded it neatly, and draped it on the back of Kendra's wheelchair. That's what she made it for, after all!
